I visited today with two 12 year old girls and was fully expecting the "Can we go yet?" routine. How wrong I was. The guide in each room made a point of speaking to us and sharing their knowledge of the house. It transformed the visit. My girls thoroughly enjoyed speaking to the guides and asking questions about the house,... More

This house is fantastic. It's remarkable how it's been restored after the property was left in such a state. Every member of staff was extremely knowledgable and offered information if you wanted. If you want a quick look round that's fine too. The attention to detail is amazing.

We spent 1 hour around this magnificent house. Quite cheap attraction. People inside the house very helpful and willing to explain the story of each room. Open ticket for 1 year which means you can go back for free whenever you want!

Designed by John Carr, this Georgian townhouse was the residence of Viscount Fairfax, a devout Catholic. The furniture came from Terry the chocolatier's collection. The staff are very knowledgeable and are on hand to answer questions. Fascinating.

Visited Fairfax House on a Monday for the guided tour, which was superb. The guide was well-informed and made it very interesting. The tour made it good value for money. The house would have been interesting on a wander-around visit I'm not sure I'd have given it such a high rating without the tour.

Very well presented house. Each room has a volunteer in it who will tell you anything you want to know. Their enthusiasm rubs off and it definitely adds to the visit. Kid activities keep the young ones interested too.

Even as a York resident, I had never been so curiosity for the better of me. It was very interesting and better than expected

I suggest that, before taking the tour, you purchase their highly illustrated Guide Book. The décor and furnishing are stunning with, perhaps, the Great Staircase with its Venetian Window taking pride of place - beautiful in itself but full of secret religious symbols reflecting the Fairfax Family's devout 18th Century Roman Catholic faith

Having enjoyed many of the larger houses in England over the years, it was great to discover this restored treasure on my own doorstep. The restoration is excellent, the fixtures and fittings very interesting and the history of the house and its place in the York story available via the guides, who were happy to answer questions.
