Definitely worth the ghost shame about the one member of staff
Definitely worth the que and all the staff were lovely apart from one who served us at the till, once purchasing the ghost I said to my friend “oh I’m spending too much money today” to be met buy from the male member of staff are your poor? Which completely startled me! He then produced to inform me I must have grown up poor and that’s why I was talking about spending money. Kind of ruined the experience if I’m honest. The team outside entertaining the que were great just let down by one member of staff which is a shame. But if you visiting the ghosts are definitely worth a purchase!

    A great time for all
Very busy, but that makes Christmas market in York so good. The park and ride is a must, avoids all that anguish. A really good atmosphere at anytime of the year, but Christmas is the best. If you havnt been, it def needs to be on your list, you wont be dissapointed. The only negative is that the number of Christmas stalls that are now just basically food outlets has increased quite a bit, rather than the artisan gift outlets, which is sorry to see. However, a good time will certainly be had by all.

    Fantastic little shop
I love this place , I have visited and brought a Christmas one a few years ago , the staff are fantastic and friendly. My son now lives in York and brought me another one for this Christmas. They are a small independent shop selling an individual item, that is very reasonable priced, yes they did have to queue, but it is so worth it. This type of shop helps make York the fantastic city it is, and is a great place for young and old.

    Queue to view?
The York Ghost Merchants is located in the Shambles which is an old street in the city of York. You cannot just walk into the shop as they limit the amount of people who are allowed in the shop. It opens at 10am and I arrived a few minutes after opening time and there was already a queue of about 15 people waiting to get in. Unfortunately my time in the city was limited so was not able to spend time queuing to have a look in a shop I may or may not buy something in so decided to give it a miss.

    Wonderful staff and great experience
Waiting in the line today was made easier by the kind and informative company of Mr Cherry. He was very helpful and extremely polite, and he made us laugh the whole time we waited to get into the shop. We also met Miss Blythe, who was also extremely kind and helpful. The staff were the highlight of our experience today and we look forward to coming again very soon.

    Best Part of York
I have been going to the York Ghost Merchants for just under a year now and I love it every time. Despite the long queue, it's always a fun experience and the staff just make everything that much better! My partner and I always love having a laugh with Mr Appleyard and seeing Ms Ambrose and Mr Cherry always brightens our day. We loved it so much that we even got engaged outside the shop and each staff member couldn't be more excited over it- we will always come back here with fond memories

Really enjoyed my visit today with my husband we joined the que which took us about an hour 15, we’ll worth the wait. The staff are lovely and very happy and chirpy and interact with all the people waiting which is lovely! The shop is small but it’s amazing the ghosts wow! I went with the intention of buying one large and one small ended up with 6 large and one small haha I’ll definitely be back now we’re going to be collecting these! They’re so cool!

    An unusual treat
On our trip to York, this was the one thing I wanted to do. I was determined to get a York Ghost. We were turned away in the morning as they already had their quota for the queue and as they explained politely, it is a very cold day and they wouldn’t want us to wait around. We came back later and JUST made it to the end of the queue before they closed it for the day (2.30pm). It was estimated that it would be a 3 hour wait. This is a massive ask for children but mine wanted to go in! The staff are lovely. Very chatty and in character. The queue really did take almost 3 hours which can be difficult with children and the need for the toilet. The shop has to be seen as an experience as it is really hands on once you get inside. You are encouraged to take photos of your ghosts in a little street set up. I went with the intention of buying one maybe two ghosts… this was not the case! The only reason that I did not award 5 stars is purely because of the queuing. I understand that it is to give people the chance to browse and choose their ghost which I admit was lovely to do without the shop being packed but there was a person in there that was in there for a LONG, LONG time! This holds up the queue which makes it longer to get in. Take a hot drink, have a wee before you join, don’t have ANY other plans until you’re out and enjoy the experience!

Worth the wait - come prepared
Arrived at 8am and was third in queue (opens at 10am) and I would advise turning up early for this reason. However, with a couple of podcasts and a hot tea the wait was absolutely fine. This was in half term and the only time I could get here so I knew it would be busy. Lovely ghosts purchased. When I left the queue looked to be a couple of hours long but moving frequently.

    Fun activity worth the wait
The York Ghost Merchant is a must when visiting the city as a tourist. There will usually be a very long queue (for us it was 2.5 hours after arriving at 10:30am; only 30 minutes after the shop opened). The staff were mostly friendly and chatty during the wait. The shop itself is great and the ghosts are so well made! They’re a bit pricey for what they are but I would say it’s worth it for the experience. I think one aspect the shop could improve on would be the rules for people in the queue. Whilst stood in the queue my partner and I heard three different explanations from 3 different shop workers regarding how people could leave the queue and rejoin if someone from the party was still there. I think this is a bit unfair and caused, us as witnesses to these explanations, feeling confused by the rules of the queue. I think clarity and consensus amongst employees for the rules of leaving and rejoining the queue would help. Overall, great experience :)

Well, Yorkshire isn’t doing too well from my reviews this week. Went to York for the first time in some years, the Shambles is just that, a shambles, shop after shop selling tat! The whole thing detracts from the lovely old street it used to be, it now resembles a film set. The worse of all is the York Ghost Shop, I cannot believe people pay for the very cheap looking ghost which must have a manufacture cost of 50p. But the queue at the top of the street, blocking access and generally is a bloody nuisance. But woe betide you if you attempt to look through the window, the queue members, members of staff treat you like they own the street and you have no right to look in a window! Unbelievable. However, 10/10 for the person who came up with this business model, deny someone, something they didn’t want but convince them is essential to their York visit, and you can be a rich person too!

We joined the queue at 10am on a Saturday morning and we were told that it would be about a 3.5 hour wait. We were happy to queue as we wanted to get a few ghosts to take home. It took us about 3 hours to get in. All the staff were amazing. The shop was brilliant and was glad we queued to get in.

The queues are definitely not their fault but for a small shop I feel like the queuing system could be run differently. The shop is very cute, the staff are very friendly and did their best to keep us entertained. But queuing for two hours to see one small room was a bit disappointing. The ghosts are very cute though and the photo nook is a sweet idea. The packaging is also very nice.

Bring a camping chair with you and be prepared to wait for a good few hours if you want to visit the main shop. We originally wanted to go on the Saturday (our mistake) and were told that the wait was 4-hours long...so we decided to come back early on the Sunday morning, and whilst waiting in the queue 2+ hours before the shop actually opened, a very friendly staff member told us of their pop-up shop in St Anthony's Gardens that only had a wait time of 15-minutes, so we popped along there, and were in and out in no time. Both of the staff members working here (29/10/23) were absolutely brand-new, so friendly, informative, and helpful. I chose 3 ghosts, and one of the Phantoms. It was my husband and I's 1-year wedding anniversary, and the lovely lady at the counter gave me a small cotton tote bag free of charge, which was so unexpected and so lovely. I think that the hype for this is worth it, it is a lovely experience, and the ghosts are adorable.

Only a 45 minute wait for us! It went fast and the guy manning the queue was brilliant! They’ve done this shop so well. £17 for a ghost was not too bad considering what tourists would probably pay. We didn’t feel rushed or pushed into buying once in.
Great fun!

We visited the smaller dispensary when it opened at 10am so only had to wait 20 minutes. By the time we left the queue was an hour long. Not as many ghosts to choose from so you shouldn’t be waiting as long for people to choose. The shambles queue was 3 hours both days we walked past and I can’t see how the whole thing is worth it. If you want the experience of queuing to bag your self a little ghost you won’t be disappointed it is an experience.
Staff were very friendly

We tried to get in 6 times with out success. The queues were always very long. We were only here for 3 days and on our last day the shop is closed. When we tried for the last time today the shop was closing in 20 minutes and the queue was short..Lorraine

We asked the man who was staff at the end of the line could he please just let our 7 year old have a quick look and he refused and even after nearly begging him he wouldn't have any of it and we said we would come back early in the morning to be told it wasn't open We have now got one very disappointed 7 year old who couldn't understand why he wasn't allowed in a shop to spend his pocket money overall very very disappointed so will not try to r

Gorgeous quirky little shop! Saw all the videos with the 3+ hour queues but while we were in york we had a walk by and dropped right on and only queued for 20 minutes! The staff seemed as shocked as we were 🤣
Staff are so friendly, patient and approachable, excellent at keeping things organised.
Such a wide range of ghosts, even ones in little hidey holes. Every colour and pattern you could think of! I absolutely loved visiting and would recommend to anyone visiting york!! Thank you so much ❤️👻

What a joke. People queuing for hours for this and blocking The Shambles making it a very unpleasant experience! Safety hazard too. Get real it's a overpriced small piece of small pottery. Nothing special.
