- alpriestWarrington, United Kingdom95 contributionsGreat interactive fun for kidsWe visited with our 9yo son and were lucky to be in a small group of 7 (one other child). Joel(?) our guide was really enthusiastic and really involved the kids, asking them questions and talking really at their level. After about 30 minutes of showing things found during digs and talking about archaeology, we went to their fun dig site where you get to scrape away the fake dirt and see what you have uncovered. There are 4 dig sites each with different things to find and history to hear about. You likely won’t do all 4 sites in the 30 minutes but don’t worry because there’s so much to learn your brain will be full! You’re then free to look around the rest of the museum, eg see / smell / touch archaeology exhibition. This was great but try to go when there’s a smaller group (eg first thing) as your kids will be so much more involved = not bored!Thank you very much for your review. - Joanna M3 contributionsGot to Grill an Archaelogist, Very Educational!DIG is an attraction that testfies to York's rich history and it's recent archaeological discoveries. I attended the last talk of the day which is reserved for adult's only. This meant that the speaker was able to spend time exploring each of our questions specifically rather than wrangling children too! As there was a fairly small group of us, this was a great experience. We were encouraged to ask questions and the talk speaker was an archaeologist with experience in the field. This was great as you could really ask anything and they had an insiders knowledge of how archaeoligical digs work as well as an obvious passion for the facts they were sharing. Their specialty was in human remains but when asked about glass they were perfectly able to educate us on that too. The dig pits were still available for adults to have a go at excavating. It was fun to "get your hands dirty" (though the "dirt" is not real so don't worry about getting messy). There is no pressure to do this though if it's not your cup of tea. Highly recommend going along!Thank you very much for your review. We're very glad to hear that you enjoyed the experience. - Ruddy DuckKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom3 contributionsUnique kids focused museumWe recently went on our second trip to Dig as we had some time to kill in York and decided to take advantage of our yearly pass from a previous visit. As our tour guide was different from our first time we learnt new things and saw different artefacts which was great. The children were talked to like they were intelligent which made them want to work out the answers and they felt confident to make guesses. I was really impressed by how our tour guide made sure that our 6 year old understood and reexplained when she didnt. Dig is a really unique kids focused museum but it's also really interesting for adults and definitely worth a repeat visit.Thank you very much for your review. - XantheSGBeverley, United Kingdom270 contributionsInteresting and Fun for the Whole FamilyWe were 3 generations from age 3 to 71 and Anastasia catered for us all. The two children were welcome to go to the play area at any time for the 25 minute talk but they stayed and were interested. Digging in the 'clean' dirt was fun and we could call Anastasia to explain our finds at any time. Very well organised in the beautiful and ancient St. Saviour's Church.Thank you very much for your review. We're very glad to hear that you enjoyed the experience. - Cate GYork, United Kingdom50 contributionsGood Birthday partyMy son loved his birthday party at Dig on Saturday. The pros: The viking host and the other person assigned to us were lovely and really helpful. The staff were all friendly. The food was great, I believe the sandwich selection is a bit too grown up for kids. Plain cheese or ham etc would probably be better so alot went to waste, us grown ups certainly loved them. The fruit was amazing. Loads of it and berries, watermelon etc not just cheap fruit. The craft activity was great. Making the shields was very fun. The kids loved the dig pits and doing the shield wall. The cons: Poor communication meant we arrived at 1:40 and had nowhere really to wait or put our coats. Not all as advertised. At the banquet they did not have goblets just plastic beakers. Also there was no viking selfie photo frame and props as advertised on the website. There was an opportunity to take pictures with weapons but we had to all line up for this, time was allocated in the party for this so not really a selfie activity and no selfie frame. It is not a big thing though. Overall for a kids party with a bit of a difference I would recommend. Several of the parents told me their children said it was the best birthday party they had ever been to.Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. - Chris6 contributionsFantastic fun for all the family!Started off with a talk about archeology which was fun and engaging. Our 7 year old loved it as did we. Then on to the dig. The dig sites are fascinating, uncovering some real-life stories. This is a must-do for families. It hints on the we site that it’s mainly fun for kids, but us adults had a great time too!Thank you very much for your review. We're very glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience! - JedAfterthoughtLevin, New Zealand264 contributionsBrilliant presenter! This was our last stop on the ‘Pastport’ tour of four properties managed by the York Archeological Trust. We were given hands-on opportunities to interact with items from York’s archeological past, with a brilliant running commentary from an inspiring young professional. Fascinating, superb commentary, and if you have children they get to ‘dig’ for themselves. Set in a beautiful old church building. Well worth the visit.Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a review! We really appreciate your comments. - Sarah MEdinburgh, United Kingdom21 contributionsFamily FunMy husband and I took our 2 kids (7 & 4) to Dig and were lucky enough to get a personal tour from Sarah (we booked the 3pm slot, which was quiet). Sarah gave us a really interesting talk about the artefacts and, even though my 4 year old was probably a bit young for it, Sarah did really well to engage with and involve both kids and pitched her talk at the right level. It was great for us adults too. Both kids loved the digging part and were excited by the finds. We'll definitely visit again.Hi there Sarah, thanks for taking the time to leave a review! Gave lots of information during the talk, engaged with all the kids and adults alike. We all had fun digging and being archaeologists for the 2nd half. Definitely aimed more at families with younger children. My 12 yr old enjoyed it but much older might get bored unless they have a keen interest in archaeology, the tour guides are very knowledgeable.Hi there, thanks for taking the time to leave a review! The female archaeologist was enthusiastic and informative. A superb ambassador for the subject.. we took our two grandsons 5 &7 on Sunday 18th August for the 1:30 ‘slot’ and she held their attention for over twenty minutes. Impressive. Then onto the dig itself. Great fun, what’s not to like when you ‘re seven and you can unearth a skeleton.Hi there Rob, thanks for taking the time to leave a review! We went with our four and nine year olds. Both loved it. The older one learned a lot and the younger just loved finding bones and the crazy story about poo :) The digging activity took about an hour, then you had 45 minutes to walk around the museum portion. We then went to Jorvik; we booked a double ticket which was a great deal. Everyone was really knowledgeable and good with interacting with kids.

Please be warned if you are attempting to go to Dig with Tesco vouchers it is a total gamble if you will be able to use these during a busy period like the Easter holidays. We will be coming away with nearly £40 of non- refundable wasted vouchers.
Unlike Yorvik (which is fantastic) where you can pre book tickets or queue on the day: with Dig it is a system where you have to try and go in person to use your vouchers to book a session time. It is poorly advertised but note this is for sessions that day only. They will not let you book a space for the next day if the day you are trying is full which is v likely during busy periods with tickets getting booked online v quickly. Ridiculous when there are plenty of spaces for the next day the day before but by morning they will likely be gone.
This means you can't plan your trip to Dig at all and just have to cross fingers there might be spaces on day- tricky for a family of 5.
The customer service at the Dig desk was not helpful or sympathetic: they would not even let us know how spaces were looking for the next day because they said they would have to see how main ticket sales went first and wouldn't know till next day for mere Tesco paying customers to get a look in.
From the terse response from the lady on the Dig desk perhaps it is something they have to deal with regularly and find frustrating too. In which case don't bother to be a Tesco exchange partner or improve the ridiculous system.
In the meantime please make it clearer that Tesco customers can only book a session on the day and during busy periods this will be highly unlikely to save others wasting their vouchers that could have been used elsewhere.

We visited on a Sunday with our 5yr old and he absolutely loved this! The staff are very knowledgable and friendly. The activity focuses on 4 small ‘dig’ pits from 4 different historical eras. Our little boy loved digging and finding different things. COVID-19 precaution was good and we thought it was great value for money as bought as part of a ticket for Jorvik.

I visited with my daughter (7), and we were joined by my daughter's friend (6) and his mum. We all had a brilliant time at DIG.
When we first arrived, we all had a chance to sit and listen as our guide explained a variety of different artefacts, which were passed around or shown under a microscope. My daughter really loved this session, as there were lots of engaging opportunities to answer questions. This initial talk added a really valuable educational element. There were a few people in our group that felt less comfortable in this question and answer environment, and I was particularly impressed by how our guide focused on those that did feel more able to join in, without pressuring others (and there were stickers available for everyone to show how much they wanted to be involved), but made sure to instantly react when the quieter group members felt ready to volunteer ideas. It was a really inclusive experience.
Afterwards, the children were able to go and dig in a variety of different pits (filled with clean rubber pieces) to find artefacts of their own. They enjoyed finding skeletons, bits of pottery and other treasures, which brought their learning to life. Our group's guide was there to comment on each find, so the children understood exactly what they were looking at.
There was also a small museum, more interesting for the adults than the children, so we didn't feel we were missing out either!

Pitched at very young children and think those ggere really enjoyed it. I thought it was an actual viking dig but it's not although there are some artifacts to look at. Children can dig in replica pits which looked fun for them. As an adult with older kids wanted more information on actual dogs and history of york

Booked this as part of the Jorvik package, but it was m favourite part. The guide was really interesting talking about the things that had been found in the past and relating it to everyday life. It was really fun to ‘dig’ for hidden remains in the museum. Had booked the last tour as I was sure it said adult only, however, there were a few children in the big group but wasn’t made to feel as if it was only for the children.

A bit over the top with Covid preparations, put hand gel on before going through door, then wash hands. Then wear gloves and gel hands which have been in gloves. However if that’s what it takes to keep open so be it.
We was the last session of the day and clearly shown the door with the gift shop being shut and other areas not invited to look at.
The dig part itself was good and the staff very knowledgable.

Hi there, we're glad you enjoyed DIG. We're sorry you felt Covid-19 preparations were over the top. As I'm sure you can understand, these measures are there for everyone's safety. However, we do take feedback seriously and have passed this onto the relevant department. Thanks!

The way this place is set out is great. A 25 min talk then 30 min dig and then look around afterwards. However I wasn’t expecting the talk to be done by a person wearing a mask. I am totally deaf in one ear and there was lots of background noise too, I couldn’t hear anything he was saying which seemed interesting. We were sitting at the back and they’d started the talk just before we arrived so didn’t feel I could say anything. My children aged 10 and 11 who can hear with no problems struggled to hear everything. So this really took the enjoyment out of the first part. The dig was great and we all loved that part.

Went here with a 3 and 5 year old. We were told it was aimed at slightly older children. However we all throughly enjoyed going here. The staff were great, friendly and informative. We are looking forward to going back next year as our tickets last a year and hopefully our son will learn more again

Do you think DIG is also worthwhile for our children (aged 3 and 5) who speak a different language than English? They always watch English Netflix so might have a basic understanding, but never used English in a real-life situation.

Is there anything about dinosaurs during the talk and DIG??My 5 year old son loves dinosaurs
Written 29 June 2023
My sons when they saw the “skeletons” announced it was a dinosaur but as the guide explained to them. Dig is based on archeology and dinosaurs are palaeontology which would be deeper than archaeologists dig

Is it better to do Yorvik first and then DIG or the other way round? Our son is 7.
Written 16 October 2022
I’m not it matters. We did it the other way round and it was good for my children to be able to share with the guide what they had seen at Yorvik and he tied it into what he taught my kids.
Written 17 September 2024
What is the optimum age for the digging? My son is a mature 10
Written 11 May 2019
If he has any interest in history or archaeology he should enjoy the "Dig". The experience is very interactive and engaging and gives kids the opportunity ti get up close with real archaeology.
Written 21 May 2019
How long does the whole experience take?
Written 25 July 2018
It is about an hour for the tour, plus how ever long you want to look around the other small exhibitions. Overall I would leave about an hour and a quarter.
Written 27 July 2018
Would this be suitable for two adults interested in history, or is purely aimed at children? Would we feel a bit weird joining in?
Written 25 March 2018
Personally I think the Dig centre is really aimed at children and school trips. However, my husband and I have been and there is still a lot of interesting information. Best not to try and go in school holidays!

the activity lasts about an hour but then there are other interactive things to do and other exhibits to look at. so could be anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending in your age and level of interest
