I walked up to buy some kippers before I went home and although the sign said open Monday to Friday from 9 to 3pm or something like that I couldn't get in at 10.30am!! No body around and no back in 5 mins if that...More

We really look forward to buying kippers and smoked bacon when visiting Whitby. Their kippers are sold according to size. Both the kippers and bacon are very tasty.

I can’t imagine there are many places like this! Tucked away in the back streets of Whitby near the foot of the 199 steps to the Abbey. The smokehouse doesn’t look like it has changed for years, just like the counter. We bought a pair...More

This place is worth seeking out just to see the building the kippers are smoked and sold from. It is tucked away on a narrow street with fisherman's cottages. Mostly now made into holiday accommodation. It really is a step back in time.

Whitby is such an interesting place. If you’re travelling from the South it’s perhaps not the easiest place to find. But if you do make the effort make sure you take a moment to buy some kippers or smoked salmon from Fortunes. We always make...More
