Step back (up and down) in time
Always avoided these as steps are not my friend (short-sighted and wear distance glasses). However, as we were parked in the Abbey Car Park we came this way into town, and back again. Tried to keep up with the number but soon lost count, but didn't matter as at the top, there is a plaque confirming the sponsors who donated funds for the restoration. A nice touch

    Worth the climb
199 steps sounds like a lot but they are shallow and a fit person can take them two at a time. There were a lot of people huffing and puffing and moaning on the way up but it really is not that strenuous and there are places to rest and enjoy the views which are magnificent. The abbey at the top is a lovely sight.

    Not as bad as expecting!
A had to be done walk. Was not as bad as expected! Plenty of benches at intervals but pleased we didn't stop at one. Walk up better than walk down. Great views at the top! Something that has to be done visiting Whitby!

Whitby steps - worth the effort
A nice walk through town followed by the climb up the 199 steps. It's worth it as the views are incredible across the town and harbour and there is a brewery at the top. the brewery has a nice selection of beer and a great pizza oven.

    Great views!
Can’t go to Whitby without climbing the 199 steps. Great views. Look out for the marker on every 10th step. We went in February so wasn’t busy. Can imagine it’s not as much fun with lots of people.

It’s something we always do when visiting Whitby, climb the 199 steps!
Rain, snow or blow, it’s worth that effort to get to the top, and take in the magnificent views beneath you!

Yes, it really is 199 steps - but unless you are going to drive, you have to get to the top somehow (Whitby Abbey, Caedmon's Cross etc)! There are roman numerals on the fronts of some steps to correct your count.

Take it slowly - take in the scenery - and it is not that bad!

199 steps down. What more can I say. 199 back up were worse. Thankfully a few seats at intervals for those that needed a rest.

I can’t believe this is a separate item on Trip Advisor, but - yes - there are 199 steps up to the Abbey. They are, erm, stone steps. It’s pretty scenic and worth a climb up there for the view (I jogged up one evening), but not really ‘an attraction’ as such.

Get to them either at the rear of st Mary’s church or down in the harbour. Amazing views from the top of the area. If you look on the stops there’s counters on the left ever 10 steps. It wasn’t a difficult climb for us but it can be busy
