The area
Neighbourhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
How to get there
- Piccadilly Circus • 4 min walk
- Charing Cross • 5 min walk

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This statue on Waterloo Place commemorates the Allied victory in the Crimean War of 1853–56. It was dedicated to the memory of 2152 Officers, Non-Com. Officers and Privates of the BRIGADE OF GUARDS who fell during the war.
It was unveiled in 1861 and consisted of the statues of three Guardsmen, with a female allegorical figure referred to as Honour. It was cast in bronze, with components cast from melted down cannons that had been captured at the Siege of Sevastopol.
On the front is a plaque reads:
The Guards' Memorial was pulled down in the year of our lord 1914 and was re- erected 30 feet north in order to permit the erection of the Florence Nightingale and Sidney Herbert statues.

The Crimean War Memorial is an imposing monument to the many people who sacrificed their lives during the Crimean War. It is good that Florence Nightingale also has a memorial in front of the statue.
The memorial is located in Waterloo Place and is a short walk from Pall Mall, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus.
Worth checking out if you like tracking down statues.

This memorial is in tribute to the 2000+ soldiers of the British of Guards who fell in the Crimean War. The Monument features 3 figures of the guards representing the Coldstream Guards, the Scots Guards and the Grenadiers, their heads bowed. Standing above the three figures is an allegorical figure of Victory presenting a laurel wreath to the guardsmen. Adjacent to this monument is another to Florence Nightingale, who provided much nursing care to the soldiers during the war.

Just near Pall Mall is the Crimean War Memorial an impressive monument to a terrible event only a few years before WWI and often forgotten, well worth your time.

Long before world war 1 & 2, Great Britain and France joined forces to beat Russia and this monument is to celebrate that victory.
This was the war that became the reason why Alaska is now US territory and gave Russia in return its most famous writer Leo Tolstoy.
And the best thing to come out of the worst thing in the world was of course the grandmother of all nurses Florence Nightingale who served in this war.

This huge memorial on Waterloo Place at the junction of Lower Regent Street and Pall Mall dates from 1861 less than a decade after the Crimean War (1853-6) ended. It is a fitting reminder of how relatively peaceful the reign of Queen Victoria was compared with the bloodbaths of the first half of the twentieth century and beyond. It was sculpted by John Bell from cannon captured at the Battle of Sevastopol. It was moved to its present position in 1914 to accommodate the memorials to Florence Nightingale and Sidney Walker which now stand directly in front of it.

Waterloo Place is the location for around a dozen historic monuments. This is one of the bigger ones, flanked by statues of two of the war’s medical heroes, Florence Nightingale and Sidney Herbert. The bare stone plinth supports sculptures of three servicemen snd is topped by another statue, this one of a robed female figure. An impressive memorial to the tens of thousands who perished.

This is the type of monument which people are not usually putting in their plans when they are going to a city. When was the last time you heard somebody saying "Hey, I booked a ticket to London. I am going to see the Crimean War Memorial". You haven't, surely. BUT this is a great place to feel the history. LITERALLY! Probably my favourite combination of words is "Did you know?". Well, DID YOU KNOW that all the metal this monument is made from is taken from the Russian guns (from their ships) of the siege of Sevastopol? Think of it that way. If you touch them basically you are touching a piece of history. How cool is that?!?
We are doing YouTube series and one of our goals is to show those curious details to the people that are literally passing next to them but they are not aware of. So if you are curious about the city then just search on YouTube for "Curious Pavel". And if you want to learn more about this monument then just add "Crimean war" in the search box.

The Crimean war memorial sits in a pile of statutes so somewhat looked lost and out of
Context . It’s nice in its own right.
