About
A thousand years of history The church is built on the site where St Alfege was killed by the Danes in 1012 AD. Forget 1066. History at St Alfege Church begins in 1012, when Danish warriors killed a hostage they had taken during their raid on Canterbury. The murder of Alfege, Archbishop of Canterbury, here in Greenwich led to the building of the first church. It was rebuilt in the 13th century, and later, with Greenwich Palace not far away, was lucky enough to have Thomas Tallis as church organist. When the roof collapsed, the medieval church was replaced in 1718 by the present building, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor - apart from the tower, which was remodelled by local architect John James. Bombing in the Second World War led to a second roof collapse, and a wholesale restoration. The church was rededicated in 1953. Among the extraordinary cast of characters buried in the crypt and graveyard is General Wolfe, victor of Quebec. Heritage at St Alfege Church is as much about the li

Went on the hidden spaces tour and really enjoyed it. Was really interesting to go down into the crypt, lots of amazing stories about people who'd made incredible impact. Suzy our tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and had a good clear voice making it easy to listen to. The church itself has some interesting features, with great acoustics. Whilst we were there we managed to catch a snippet of a piano performance which was a bonus.

The Hidden Spaces tour is fantastic! It lasts just over an hour and we were all amazed at the history hidden in the crypt below the church. Our tour guide Suzy is fun and engaging and highly knowledgeable on her subject. A beautiful way to spend a Saturday morning. A group of musicians started a delightful classical concert which we attended as well. We will visit to see more musical concerts in future. Thanks to the lovely team for welcoming us all and allowing us to explore, ask questions and take pictures and films from inside. It should be taught to all schools in the area as the connections to social history, the river and local families is fascinating. It’s surprising how much we learnt in an hour!

We did the hidden spaces tour which took us round the crypt and the up to the balconies. It was a fascinating talk, very interesting and informative. It's a lovely church with lots of history. Thoroughly recommend the tour. Also look out for the musical performances there - the acoustics are great and it's a very pleasing place to sit in and listen.

It is in the cemetery of this Anglican church dedicated to St Alfege (archbishop of Canterbury who was martyred by the Danes on April 19, 1012 on the very site of the church), that his remains were buried on the return of England, the British general officer James Wolfe (1727-1759), died victorious on September 13, 1759 during the battle fought on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec (New France, Seven Years' War), opposing British troops to from the French army, to Canadian militiamen and their First Nations allies. Of medieval origin, this temple was rebuilt between 1712 and 1714, according to the plans of the English architect Nicholas Hawksmoor (≈1661-1736). Other British celebrities buried in this church include the English Renaissance music composer Thomas Tallis (≈1505–1585). It is also in this church that Henry VIII was baptized in 1491. Rectangular in plan with a flat ceiling and a small apse serving as a choir, St Alfege Church has a facade (east side, towards the street) with a portico of Tuscan order, with a central arch intersecting the entablature and the pediment. The crypt served as an air raid shelter during the Second World War.

This is an 18th century church, rebuilt after WWII bombing. The composer Thomas Tallis was its organist for some time, and part of an organ he probably played is on display. There is plenty of information about its history around the church, and two very welcoming people answered our questions. Well worth a visit.

Interestingly it doesn't really look like a church on the outside. The stonework has been recently cleaned. Henry viii was baptised here. Quite close to queens house that I would definately recommend.
Loved Greenwich. Glad I stayed here.

I stick my head into a lot of churches this is a church with a lot of history the burial place of Thomas Tallis ( 1505 - 1585) music composer, also connection to General Wolfe. It has a nice stained glass window above the alter wooden pews and and a nice organ I should say this is an Anglican Church well worth 15 to 20 minutes to have a look free entry and if you like you can take photos.
