Neighbourhood: Whitechapel
Whether you're here for its dynamic street life, world class galleries or famed curry houses, you're bound to be wowed by the uniquely cosmopolitan flavor of Whitechapel. Long gone are the days when Jack the Ripper stalked its streets. And despite his mysterious legacy bringing throngs of curiosity driven tour groups to its back alleys and otherwise serene garden squares, these days you're more likely to catch a cutting edge fashionista scurrying through its age old lanes than criminals of any sort.

He was definitely passionate about the subject and had a very in depth understanding of the subject and the general history of the area. I was truly mind blown by the experience and loved every moment. A true highlight of our trip to London. The museum was fantastic, but highly recommend the tour. Don’t miss out!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2023
- Danny TomásFaro District, Portugal1 contributionA Trip To The Autumn Of Terror! As soon as I opened the door, I was Greeted by this friendly lady, who explained the full layout of the museum and where I should start my tour! There are 5 very well decorated rooms (including the cave which is a mortuary) filled with information, posters, and real artefacts from the victorian era! As soon as you get in, you get transported to the Autumn of Terror! The museum also puts the spot on the victims, making us remember that they were important as well! If you're a Ripperologist this is a must stop! The gift shop, has a wide arrange of items, including posters, pens, postcards, many books, some clothing options, and lots of cute pins!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 September 2023
- Anna B1 contributionGreat day outWent to the museum then did the guided walk, the museum was great, like stepping back into 1888! They have the original notebook, whistle & truncheon that the policeman who discovered Catherine Eddows was carrying, all 5 rooms are fascinating & well worth a visit. The guided walk is really worth doing as well, I was surprised at how close all the murder scenes were to each other, our guide Sam was lovely & really knowledgeable & even though it was pouring with rain gave us a really good experience! Would highly recommend!Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 September 2023

- David Roy PBatemans Bay, Australia621 contributionsExcellent MuseumMy Wife & I both love Murder Mysteries and Jack the Ripper is the Ultimate Mystery . So when I found it on the internet we had to visit it during our UK trip . We travelled to London from Chatham on the Train and it was a short Taxi ride to the Museum from London Bridge Station . Admission is just 10 Pounds for Adults , 8 pounds for Pensioners /Children . The Museum is spread over 5 floors each represent different aspects of the case . The Basement is a recreation of the Mortuary that used to be in the adjoining Building .The Body of Elizabeth Stride was Taken there . You can see the original Post Mortem Photographs taken at the time . Everything in the Museum is tastefully displayed . It shows the facts of the case including that there were more than 5 Victims . In fact up to 12 Victims . They have a gift shop for souvenirs . This is a Brilliant Museum .Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2023
- Josh MLondon, United Kingdom8 contributionsVery nice little museum! This museum is right in the heart of where the Ripper struck! My son is studying Jack the Ripper at school so this doubled up as both fun and and educational. The people who work there are lovely and we went on a Sunday after noon (it is open until 6 even then!). Very interesting, not too yucky! Close to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London too which was good.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 October 2023
- Louise M13 contributionsDark, macabre and fascinatingThis was one of the best activities we did on our break in London. We started with the walking tour. Our guide Sam was a legend. Great knowledge not just re: Jack the Ripper but also about the history of London and it’s modern day workings. Sam happens to possess a wicked sense of humour too. We finished at the museum and was pleased we’d done it this way round as it helped us get the most out of the museum. Would definitely recommend the tour and museum.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023

Ms. Pat at the museum was very kind and explained detailed directions on where to meet our guide Sam. Sam was marvelous! He is a historian that kept our walk interesting. I give him and Ms. Pat 5 stars!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 October 2023

This was great. Sam was very good and shared lots of information which made for a very information tour. We also had time to go back to the museum to have a quick look around again and purchase a souvenir.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023

I would recommend doing both the museum and the walk combo as it was really good value for the amount of information. I'm glad we chose to do the museum first as well, as the walk was just over 1.5 hours. The museum is not very big, 30-40 mins is enough but great attention to detail and good background to the walk, also some interesting items in the little shop. Best part was the tour guide Sam, as a historian and researcher he clearly has a wide knowledge of not just the Jack the Ripper story but the Victorian era as a whole and painted a realistic picture of the times the murders took place. Additionally he pointed out some other interesting London facts and gave some documentary recommendations if interested to learn more.

Although the museum is very small and most of what you see can be googled, we thought it was still worth visiting and was very reasonably priced. We booked the walking tour which was excellent and far better than anticipated. For the price we paid, £16pp for entrance to the museum and the tour we were not expecting much as we considered it fairly cheap. However the tour which lasted approx 1hr 40mins with a local historian and researcher far outweighed our expectations. (Apologies for forgetting the name, I think he was possibly "Sam") So much information given and intelligent answers given to questions asked. Lots of local history snippets too. We would definetly recommend the walking tour added on to the museum entrance.

It was very short, it advised 2 hours on the website - we were out in less than 1 !
It was a shame as it was overcrowded in such a small museum - think a time booked system would work better - to actually give you time to go around and read/look at everything, without feeling rushed.
Nearly £40 for a family is a bit much i feel, if the walking tour had been included that then would of been worth it.
Basically ok but just overall shame and expected more.

I really enjoyed the museum, it is small, but there is lots to see and read. Due to COVID-19, you need to book a timed ticket in advance. The museum opens at 10, and I was the first person to arrive (I had to wait for it to open). A couple more people arrived a little after me, but there was plenty of space for social distancing, and it did not get busy.

I went into the museum but did not take the walking tour with my mother. The museum may be five stories, but it's more like five large rooms. Each room is just a set of props, with the occasional framed paper with excessive print explaining what each room is trying to portray. I was beyond bored and had seen everything within 25 minutes (I was trying to stretch out my time and look at absolutely everything). This is a definite skip.

We visited the museum and on arrival we were greeted by a very friendly member of staff who explained how much the tickets were to the layout of the museum. We started the tour not knowing what to expect but were really pleased with the exhibits and all the information on the walls relating to the room we were in. The five levels of rooms were really interesting and we were 100% happy with our visit and highly recommend that you pay a visit and see for yourself.

Attended the museum with a group of my students having discussed various forensic science aspects of JR murders and subsequent enquiry. Thoroughly recommend this as a way of contextualising many aspects of our teaching and know that the students thoroughly enjoyed the visit and the subsequent tour. Thank you to Magda for being a fabulous to guide on our trip around the various sites in Whitechapel

We come to London each year with teenage girls, and are always looking for a new experience. Jack the Ripper has always held a fascination, and now that the girls were of an appropriate age we decided to take the plunge and look deeper into this fascinating and macabre character.
The Museum itself was a helpful backdrop to both the history of the murders and surrounding environment in which they were committed. Most importantly there was the right balance between detail and reverence for such a sensitive subject.
The walk was a revelation, and Sam brought Victorian (and Roman!) London to life with his graphic description of Whitechapel and the horrors to which the 'residents' were exposed in order to eke out a torturous existence. Be prepared for some horrific revelations (but the faint-hearted can easily opt out). Cracking value for money, bearing in mind the Museum trip and walk easily cover 3 hours of entertainment.

Excellent walking tour with Magda, but don't waste your time with museum. It's really really small, you'd spent at most 40-50 min there - not worth the price.
The newspaper clippings would have been interesting to read, but the writing is so small it's impossible to read.
Very unenthusiastic staff with poor communication skills working on the till, the day I visited

Can children aged 11 and 13 go?
Written 7 November 2023
It depends upon the sensitivity of the kids. The museum is quite reverent, but with references to the modus operandi of the murders. The walk, however, is significantly more graphic in its descriptions and pictures of the murders. An adult version of Horrible Histories, if you will. If in doubt, get in touch with the operators - they are very accommodating.

Is it worth goin to the museum if you have done a guided walk
Written 17 August 2019
Hi we did a guided walk tour previously. Whilst you probably won’t learn anything new it’s the fact you get to see physical stuff for instance the police artefacts. So my opinion yes it is worth going.

Hi. 2 questions:-
1. We are looking at visiting here before we check in at our hotel- will we be allowed in with a small backpack?
2. How long does it take roughly to look around the museum?
Thanks in advance
Written 1 February 2018
Hi
It should be ok to go in with a small backpack. It is a small museum but not very busy and the attendants seem to be friendly and accommodating. It doesn't take long to look round - I'd say about 1 to 1.5 hrs. depending on how much you want to read.
Enjoy

Hi, there is no age limit, although we start charging from 8 years up. Like all have said it is really down to the discretion of the parents. Most of our school groups are from aged 11 upwards. Children should be accompanied by parents or teachers. Most secondary schools are studying Jack the Ripper and Whitechapel for their GCSE's. We hope that helps
