- Little JennyLondon, United Kingdom561 contributionsLittle gemThis is a great little museum and well worth a visit for anyone interested in the achievements of Brunel. You can enter the start of the tunnel and learn a lot here about how the tunnel was excavated. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable. After our visit we took a trip to the Great Eastern Slipway which is a few stops away on the tube/DLR.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2023
- Peter AEssex, United Kingdom1 contributionImmersive HistoryWell worth the entrance fee, the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and patient. Access might be difficult if you are less able bodied. I took your advice and went to Wapping station to photograph the twin tunnel entrances.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 September 2023
- Robert D4,258 contributionsGo on a guided tour weekendThis hidden gem is well worth visiting. Be sure to go on one of the guided tour weekends. Check their website for the dates. The museum itself is interesting and tells the story of the first Thames tunnel. But the real highlight is when the guide takes you into the tunnel shaft and explains its significance.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 September 2023
- Annie P6 contributionsReally interesting way to spend 1 hour. Small group tour!Brilliant place to visit and great way to spend about an hour. Volunteer gave a talk on the history and it was really interesting. who would have known the tunnel was supposed to be completed in 3 years but actually took 18 years!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- smwalker2022Braintree, United Kingdom4 contributionsSmall but interesting museumA fascinating museum explaining how the first Thames tunnel was constructed by Marc Brunel nis son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is well worth visiting on the guided tour days as without the tour it would have been a little underwhelming and I would not have learnt so much. There is an interesting short presentation on the top floor setting out information about how the tunnel was constructed and in the basement there is some interesting old photos plus information about the construction of the latest London Sewer. In between there is a gift shop which although small has some relevant and interesting books for adults and children alike. We had a tour and the guide was informative and helpful. We were taken into the shaft to hear more about the history of the site and could hear the trains passing underneath as the tunnel is still used by TFL. As the museum is in Rotherhithe it is a little off the tourist track so quieter than some other London attractions. The price was good value for what is a small but interesting museum. If this is an area of engineering and history that you find interesting you will enjoy this museum.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 November 2023
- Guide208985465185 contributionsAn outstanding volunteer made the experience that much better.Though I never fail to marvel at the Greenwich foot tunnel that I pass through often, I never really understood the history of such tunnels or Britain’s unique innovations in this regard. So after more than 2 decades in London, my husband and I were delighted to discover the Brunel Museum. We were lucky that we opted to go on a weekend, when volunteers are on hand to guide visitors through. Mike greeted us at the door and his abundant knowledge and infectious enthusiasm enriched our experience from the beginning. When we would straggle out of fixed interest in some little detail, he would often happen upon us again to explain some aspect of what we were observing in a way that made us see it anew. It made for a mast delightful day out at an affordable price. We enjoyed it so much that we are planning a followup trip to Bristol to view the SS Great Britain and the Clifton Suspension Bridge.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2024

Our daughters loved finding the answers to the questions they were given and it helped them get involved. Whole feel of the museum and area is relaxed and we personally really enjoyed it! - catharinebmDorset, United Kingdom35 contributionsSmaller London history treasure; only needs an hour & half approx.Definitely worth booking the 'tour' ; You can simply read posters information & watch a very good video presentation, but that does not give full impression. Our guide at 11.45am Sat April 20th was outstanding. Then take equally fascinating overground train through docklands to Greenwich for river boats back to Westminster!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- Rhona M1 contributionA real gemA real gem of a museum. Fascinating insight to a very important engineering innovation. Well presented information with some interesting artifacts. Hadn't realised that Isambard Brunel's father was also a great engineer. The social story was interesting too - the conditions the workforce laboured in and the dogged determination of Marc Brunel to get the job finished. Some nice related books etc for sale and a n interesting area to walk around afterwards. All in all a great experience - well worth a visitVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024
- David E1 contributionA really memorable experienceWe loved this experience. The guide, Helen, was really excellent at setting the scene of the time when the tunnel was built, asking us questions and answering our questions herself. Even though you are in a large hole, she transported us back to the time it was built and listening to the trains below and the water being pumped out during the presentation made the connection to the present. A really memorable experience.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024

Visited for the Midnight Apothecary pop up bar, and it was brilliant. The bar was great with really lovely, very helpful staff and everything felt incredibly safe and socially distanced but still welcoming and fun. However, the best part of the evening was without a doubt the tour with Tim! He was absolutely brilliant and totally captivating — could have listened to him talk for hours! A really brilliant night out, which has inspired us to go back and visit the museum when it’s possible to do so and also to recommend the night tour to just about everyone we know. What a gem!

We visited the Brunel Museum during a walk in the area and we have been impressed with that. It’s a small place but full of information and with a good communication of the fascinating story of Brunel and his achievements that we didn’t know. The staff has been extremely nice and helpful during the whole visit. We strongly recommend it.

The way to see this museum is to go on a weekend when they have a tour guide show you round. Currently this in on alternate weekends as detailed on their website.
This is the same price as normal entry, and was a 55 minute tour.
Our tour guide was Mark, who told us about the family history of the Brunels, then described in detail about the engineering techniques that Marc Brunel used to build what was the first tunnel under the River Thames.
Whilst the main area of the museum is fairly small but with very informative details on the walls, the highlight was being taken into the caisson 40 feet below ground.
Here Mark continued the talk in more depth (pardon the pun) and answered questions.
It was informative, entertaining and stimulating.
There is a small but well stocked gift shop, and on some evening it also has an open air cocktail bar on top of the caisson.
We were told that the museum will close October 2024 to March/April 2025 for the building of a new visitor centre.
I advise allowing one hour for the tour, an an additional half an hour for the display and shop.
Take a carrier bag because the shop do no give you one when you buy something.

This is actually a review of a visit we couldn't make! I booked tickets through the museum's online booking system weeks ago as a surprise for my engineer husband's birthday, but the week of our visit I received an email saying that the museum was actually closed on the day we had booked. What I really can't understand is why the museum is closed for every Saturday in the summer - surely peak tourist season...? I may try again, but having lost one lot of money on advance train tickets to London which are non-refundable, I am not sure I want to trust the online booking system again...

Not a spectacular place the front garden of the Brunel but it was friendly, welcoming and not too pointlessly trendy (plus we handn't been out in 8 months).
However, at a temperature of 7 degrees and no heaters, a fire is a must as the hot cocktails (ÂŁ9 each - very clever idea) just won't do, no matter how many you gulp down. Each bucket of smoke, ehm, fire, I mean fire, was ÂŁ10 (yes, 'bucket', you read right). We had to order two since it was a group of us. A portion of three small jackfruit tacos in a glamorous polystyrene take away box was ÂŁ10 and it came with a very short corn on the cob (excess is a danger). Unfortunately I didn't tick the very short corn on the cob on the cool digital menu (Honestly, how could I.. ) and the barbecue chef refused to give it to me afterwards. If I wanted it at that stage, I had to pay for it extra through the cool digital menu.
I left two and a half hours later, freezing, without the very short corn on the cob and my eyes smoked to the point of pain..
..But man, those 3 small tacos really filled me up! And we also received multiple beautiful electronic receipts as souvenirs.
PS - Careful with your hot cocktails. The tables are unstable and they may spill.
...Thank God the company was good..

The museum is currently closed, but a small area of grounds around the museum remains open to the public. Be aware that if you visit the grounds and you are seen in the grounds by a member of staff or a volunteer at the museum you are likely to be treated like a criminal, even if you are doing nothing wrong, are not acting suspiciously, and look quite respectable. This museum has a serious public relations problem and those associated with the museum need to change their attitudes.

This was a very interesting museum. We originally wanted to go as it was a dog friendly option that we had read up on when planning a trip to London, was really glad we visited as learnt a lot and the area around the museum was nice. Had a meal afterwards in the Mayflower pub that was exceptional.

I would love to visit but going upstairs takes a bit of effort! Are there lots of steps down and back up? Thanks.

Agree with all the answers above. There are some steps in the museum and also up to the herb garden.

Is there parking at the museum or close by
Written 28 April 2018
It is a small residential neighbourhood, I suppose during the day most people are off to work or shopping so it must be possible to park around there. In doubt phone the museum... or the tube?

I.K.Brunel's home & offices in London toward the end of his life were at 18 Duke Street. Whitehall.
The site was demolished I believe when the Colonial Office (later the Foreign & Commonwealth Office) was built.
Do you know exactly where 18 Duke Street was originally sited in Whitehall?

is it easy to get to from London Paddington what is the nearest tube station? many thanks

The nearest station is Rotherhithe, an overland line to get there change from Jubilee line at Canada Water. Or it is about a 15 minute walk from Bermondsey or Canada Water.
