Great old fashioned looking pub with a roaring fire .
Spotted this pub on YouTube and just had to call in during our weekend in London.
The nice cockney barman ( sorry didn`t catch his name) was very smartly dressed and really pleasant .
We sat outside with a lager and guinness, the barman offered to put the patio heaters on for us.
Look forward to calling in on our next visit to the capital .

This is one of the historical pubs in London. It is insanely tiny, but there are benches and tables outdoors for the patrons to enjoy drinks. We had just one drink, looked around and moved on to another pub. It’ll be helpful if you’ll read about the pub’s history before visiting. We enjoyed the atmosphere and historical decor.

I have to say this is my favourite London pub but on the weekend of Great British Beer Festival. I asked for two pints of London Pride. No London Pride, like going to a pub in Dublin with no Guinness. I know that Fuellers brewery and Fuellers pubs are different companies now. But not good enough.

I have visited and enjoyed the Mitre on several previous occasions with colleagues but yesterday it was a very different place. I would have complained about the poor quality of the Guinness but based on the attitude of the staff I felt it best not to. Slow poor quality and I felt they were doing me a favour in serving me my drinks. I wouldn't bother again - shame

...Amazingly that's not my comment, but a quote shouted from the landlord!
We were celebrating a friend's birthday in a reserved room upstairs. We'd been enjoying great beer, good company & friendly staff. I was close to giving a 4-5 star Tripadvisor rating until....
We ordered a large round of toasties which were brought to us upstairs by the landlord (Eaman Scott I believe). As he brought them in to us, I took one toastie from the plate - then he went absolutely mad saying, "If there's one thing I hate, it's rudeness". It seems he was annoyed that I'd taken a toastie before he'd put the plate down in the corner of the room! It was a really surprising and totally uncalled-for, over-the-top outburst. I've never been spoken to that at an establishment in the past and it really shocked me that he both shouted at me and considered me rude for taking a toastie from a plate we'd ordered! Hardly the service with a smile we'd had from his staff.
I really don't know why he considered me to be rude and on leaving I thought he might have apologised to me. But when asked for his name and he said, "Mr Scott, and make sure you spell it right!" Basil Fawlty would be proud...

A friend and I were introduced to the Mitre by a native Londoner who is a regular patron, and it was fabulous! The owner is a lovely man, very friendly and welcoming. The Mitre is a small pub that dates back to the 1500s, so you get to experience a little bit of history with your tipple. The food was your typical pub fare (I recommend the toasted sandwiches). Definitely check it out if you want a nice little lunch while touring London!

If you think that the sense of history in pubs is to keep the best from the old-times and offer it to the new customers as a vast selection of Fuller's draught beers, a friendly approach, a warm and confortable environment and a precious hidden spot....well YOM is the right place. Don't be scared about the travel guides who say that it's a hard to find place: anyway it worths.

We've been coming to the Mitre on and off for 30 years. It is either a very popular , crowded, noisy tourist spot OR a nice quiet little local london pub. We worked hard over the years to make it the latter and, to this day we can time it such that we are only there with a few other people.
There are two sides and we always prefer the small one - if you've ever heard the term "a snug" well this is a pretty good example of one.
We learned long ago that lunch time and after work time are the most crowded and noisy. We plan to arrive maybe mid afternoon - around 2. The cheese and onion toasties are a great tradition here. one would be a reasonable lunch - two people with reasonable appetites could share 3. Lots of beer and cider available. We miss the Friary Mieux though. It was pretty special. If you ever had it and enjoyed it, it is still available in some pubs in London.
As mentioned elsewhere it is kind of hard to find but if you ask directions for St. Ethelreda's church in Ely Place, the pub is just down a small passageway.
The famous tree in the corner of the pub seems to be a bit forgotten because there is no signage and I think there used to be a light in there but it is famous. Our understanding - not mentioned by either the pub's website or wikipedia - is that, back in the 1500s, it delineated the boundary between the property of the City of London and that of the Bishop of Ely. It's an old tree.
Great place.

Not a tourist pub - hidden down a narrow alley way between Hatton Garden and Ely Court.
Popped in for a quick drink and snack lunch. Unfortunately both were disappointing. My sausage roll was burnt on one side and very dry. And my husbands sausage melt toastie was also dry (and seemed to be missing or very sparse on the cheese melt). Our mulled wine drink (it was a week before Christmas) was bitter - my guess would be it was made by someone who’s never had a mulled wine before - but was easily improved by the few teaspoons of sugar I added.
On the plus side, this pub is worth a visit for its quaint location alone - hidden down a narrow alley-way off the beaten track. And the small wood-panelled bars and ‘snugs’ are cosy, authentic and transport back one’s imagination to by-gone centuries!

Hi to all!
Is it true that William Shakespeare has often visited this pub in the past?
Many thanks!

Hi Paula,
I suggest you call or email the pub. They have a great website. I cannot see any reason why children are not allowed during the day.... There are some beautiful rooms to sit in. I was there at lunch time and there were not any children present. The settings the pub is situated in is very old England and exciting. It depends on your requirements... Good luck!
