Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

The wedge-shaped building is gorgeous inside, with mosaics, reliefs, and art glass, and the pub has interesting history. It also has great food (loved the halloumi cheese fries and the chicken/mushroom pie), good beer and whiskey selections, and friendly staff and clientele. In good weather, there's also outside seating...but then you miss all the beauty inside! If you want to have dinner here, best to make a reservation. This was my second time at this pub; I brought my husband and 22-year-old son here for our first pub dinner in London on a recent trip, and they loved it, too!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 12 January 2024

This curiously wedge-shaped pub with a jolly friar over the front door, is well worth a visit for a drink or for lunch. It’s highly decorated outside, but inside, it’s an Arts & Crafts wonder, with copper relief friezes of jolly friars, and lots of beautiful marble. There’s a kind of vaulted snug tucked under the railway bridge, where every inch of wall and ceiling is decorated.
We had the beef in ale pie and the fish and chips, which were both good, although we would have tried a sandwich, but the kitchen wasn’t serving those at the time. We tried the Nicholson’s pale ale, which we enjoyed.
Friendly staff, and lovely surroundings. A little gem of a pub.

Great old london pub. The look of this pub just amazes me, it's just super cool and steeped I history. Drinks are decently priced and they accept cash. The pub is handy for buses or the tube, would visit again.

Really cool building, right next door to Blackfirars station. Good food, good beers. Unfortunately it's a part of Nicholson's Pubs chain. It's really annoying seeing EXACT same menus in a bunch of places that used to be unique historic pubs. Brings a real unpleasant feeling, like you're at Olive Garden or something. If they at very least customized menus (I'm talking about both food and beer selection and printed menus), I'd be able to forget that I'm in a chain pub. But that feeling is just nagging and it really ruins the atmosphere.
With Black Friar I guess the building itself (both inside and outside) kind of saves the day.
Yes, you do order food at the bar, no one will take order at the table. But that's of course not an issue.
Location is also a plus as the pub is right at the foot of Blackfriars bridge so after a meal and a pint you can head to Southwalk across Thames.

Excellent little pub down by the river. Sadly, the nearest tube station is closed so it is about a ten minute walk to the pub itself. The beer is good, the fish and chips VERY good and the little corner booths (theres only 2!) are great for people watching and chatting intimately with whomever you are with

Very cool and impressive decor. Well worth a visit to experience the history. Good pints too. The food menu looked good, but we’d recently eaten so didn’t partake.
