Neighbourhood: Soho
The go-to district for a good time in London, Soho hosts a wealth of world-class theatres and a compelling lineup of cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, and clubs. At Soho's core is London's original Red Light District and the epicenter of the LGBT scene – and thus the city's hottest nightlife. For shopping enthusiasts, Soho is not only the home of London's greatest concentration of boutique shops, but also the most strategic place to set off on a tour of the world's most celebrated department stores. In the southern part of the neighbourhood lies Chinatown, with its multitude of delicious and affordable restaurants. - Edward the dogChichester, United Kingdom1,751 contributionsWhat a beautiful theatre. We had the most amazing day in London yesterday which included a matinee of Stephen Sondheims Old Friends. Absolutely amazing. It was a camp old time. The theatre itself is beautiful. The staff are really friendly. The bar prices very, very good for the West End. The seating comfy. And the views from the circle amazing. Although of course it was £235 a ticket, so you woukd hope so . Its also great to see the House Full signs as well. This show is highly recommended in a lovely theatre.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- RyanNewport, United Kingdom291 contributionsAmazing Show - Beautiful TheatreStephen Sondheim's Old Friends is possibly one of the very best shows that I've seen and I'd happily see it again. The theatre is situated in the heart of the West End and within easily walking distance of public transport links. For a theatre of this age, the seats weren't as cramped as I'd been expecting although it did begin to get uncomfortable towards the end of a 2.5 hour show. Staff were friendly the prices at the bar were incredibly reasonable, at around £6.50 for a glass of wine - we'd expected to pay closer to £10.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023
- sa1gonLondon, United Kingdom1,088 contributionsGreat venue and great show - Old FriendsWe hadn't been hear since we needed a wheelchair space but both the Access and the wheelchair area was excellent. The theatre staff were great, Hannah, the Access host was very friendly and helpful. The Accessible toilet was across the foyer, but it didn't seem a hassle to use it before the show. The performance was great and although the area has a slightly restricted view, it didn't spoilt the show for us. We had a great evening and look forward to returning to see the new musical in the new year.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- Gina SSan Diego, California91 contributionsFirst look at Gielgud TheaterStephen Sondheim's Old Friends is currently playing at the Gielgud Theater and this also marks my first visit to a theater in London. It has a beautiful interior with ornate carvings on the wall, an exquisite design on the ceiling when you look up, and pretty comfortable cushioned seats. This isn't a huge theater which is good for those seating in the back rows. That means there isn't a bad seat in the house, which is perfect for this wonderful show that we had the pleasure of watching live.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 December 2023
- Maxkoda113 contributionsBrilliant THEATRE SHOW! Sheridan Smith is brilliantWe had a great evening at the theatre 🎭 Our evening was perfect from start to finish! A special mention to James who looked after us so well. The show itself was brilliant! So intense and edgy! All the cast were amazing but especially Sheridan Smith whose talent is outstanding! The people who are leaving negative reviews I suggest you all go to a cabaret show in Blackpool instead! After the Show The cast came outside to sign the programme! Sheridan Smith was so friendly and lovely to everyone! We had pics taken with Her! We had a great theatre experience!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 April 2024
- Coats-do-roamShropshire, United Kingdom20 contributionsOpening Night - “it’s okay to be different”Well, this is clearly a controversial topic! I honestly think that the musical theatre set need to open their minds to this one, it’s intense, brilliant and Sheridan is sublime! Does it require some concentration, maybe!? But this is not rocket science ! its not lines of singing showgirls and showstoppers from the off! But does every west end production really need to be - to be worthy? I am saddened at the public’s response to something so well thought out and produced, Sheridan and cast are utterly amazing ! I thank you for a wonderful performance on the night we attended and I did not see anyone leave or not enjoy what they were seeing …. “ If you always do what you’ve always done - you will always get what you always got” - come on people : open those minds!? - mrstraveller1York, United Kingdom2,134 contributionsOpening Night. Soon to be Closing Night!Well, I thought it was riveting! Booked tickets months ago on the strength of Sheridan being the lead. Our tickets were for late June but following a shock email informing us the show was to close 2 months earlier than scheduled, we had to re-jig plans to see it before May 18th (when it now ends). Apparently, audiences have been bored & confused by the production with some walking out at the interval. That certainly wasn’t the case on the night we attended. The packed house seemed very appreciative of its brilliance & of the supremely stellar cast. Sheridan is mind blowingly phenomenal, as ever she is. The girl is pure, raw talent & brings her mad, vulnerable, lovely magic to everything she touches. She's extremely well supported here though, with outstanding performances from a number of others. But light, sing-along entertainment it ain’t. It's a manic & incoherent watch at times, but also poignant & relatable. I was completely enthralled to the last.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 April 2024
- Sarah BGuildford, United Kingdom30 contributionsIgnore negative reviews...opening nightWe went to see Opening Night at the Gielgud beginning of April. We booked because we love Sheridan Smith in everything she does. Was a bit concerned with all the negative reviews, but having read the synopsis, we absolutely loved it. Sheridan was fantastic as always and the rest of the cast were brilliant too. It is confusing at times, but knowing the plot beforehand really helped. No one walked out of our performance and it got a standing ovation. It's not an all singing and all dancing musical but a thought provoking piece of theatre. It is a.massive shame its closing early as it deserves better.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 April 2024
- Badger-of-EssexManuden, United Kingdom218 contributionsAstounding customer service! My wife broke her ankle last week. We phoned the theatre and asked for assistance as our previously booked seats would have been impossible to access. Not only did they move us, they had a lovely lady called Grace meet us at the door, reassign our tickets and offer to bring us drinks/help whenever we needed it. But it wasn't just Grace, every member of staff we came across couldn't be more helpful. I thought customer service like that was dead in this country. I am utterly delighted to be proved wrong. Thank you so much!Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024

Upstart Crow is absolutely fantastic, the writing is brilliant and the jokes just keep coming. I have honestly not seen anything as funny as this and recommend people catch it while they can.
The theatre itself is beautiful and we found the facilities really good.

This is a lovely theatre, steeped in history and with great character. It does suffer from a lack of space in the foyer and too few toilets but this is common in theatres of this age. Once inside though the magic unfolds and our seats in the middle of the stalls had a great view of the stage. We went to see ‘Girl from the North country’ which was brilliant and the lighting, sets and sound were all excellent. Although not cheap (it is in Shaftesbury Avenue after all) this theatre really adds to the experience and is recommended.

This theatre is a beautiful Edwardian building I believe and any updating has been very much in keeping with its original style. We attended a performance of Hilary Mantel's "The Mirror and the Light", having previously seen "Wolf Hall "and "Bring up the bodies" at other theatres. This final part of the trilogy did not disappoint, thanks to the hugely talented cast lead by a powerful yet nuanced performance given by the star and co writer, Ben Miles - the prolonged ovation was richly deserved. All the staff at the theatre were efficient, helpful, friendly and unobtrusive which added to our enjoyment of the evening and we would definitely recommend this show and this theatre to any fellow theatre lovers.

Having never watched the TV version I really didn't know what to expect so was greatly relieved that the reviews were true. I loved it....it was sooo funny and a great performance by all the cast.
I was lucky enough to get a row H seat in the stalls for under £30 from a online ticket agency a few days before I went to a matinee performance. The seat was OK for me as I am 5ft 7ins as my seat was on a slight curve.
The architecture and details in this theatre is amazing.
The only thing I would complain about are the ladies toilets situated through the entrance to get to dress circle. The space in the cubicles are very tight. Even airplane toilets have more room. If you are a lady of a larger size then you may have a problem.

Meeting a friend, so we arrive at the theatre an hour early, and check out the dress circle bar. Staff are lovely, sell us a bottle of wine, and pop it in the cooler afterwards for us to finish during the interval :)
We are in the front row of the dress rehearsal, comfortable seats but with very restricted leg room. Perfect view of the stage.
‘Girl From The North Country’ is unlike anything we have ever seen, directed with astonishing virtuosity. A wonderful
production, perfect cast - soaring voices, gorgeous harmonies and thrilling ensemble work throughout. Atmospheric and heartbreaking, and one of the finest productions we’ve seen in a London theatre.

Upstart Crow is a treat. It is so cleverly written and excellently acted. A little knowledge of Shakespeare is an advantage although not an absolute must. It probably suits the slightly older theatre goer, as I don’t think that it would amuse the majority of teens. The seats are more comfortable than many Westend theatres.

First up: Upstart Crow is worth a watch. If you like the TV show, it's definitely worth seeing. Entertaining show, plenty of laughs from start to finish for two hours with a short internal in the middle. Well delivered by the cast and just about worth the titantic ticket prices they're charging.
We sat in the Dress circle, row c, seats 17+18 which are bang in the middle and provide a great view. Legroom is decent, although if you're really tall there's no theatre in London you'll enjoy without paying for a Box! They're not cheap, but worth it we felt.
It's quite a small theatre, which is great when you want a drink or to use the toilets - minimal queuing vs. other theatres.
Love the decor, inc the revolving chandelier as the centrepiece inside.
Ticket collection was swift and efficient.
Overall: great visit, can't find a fault.

Paid £400 for two stall seats and had to leave half way through the performance because the seats were so uncomfortable. To kill a mockingbird is a well performed and well directed show, however the poor seating & very sad condition internally of the theatre generally spoils the visit.
A small theatre that desperately needs smartening up.
Investment from the multi millionaire Macintosh is needed to substantiate the exorbitant cost of tickets.
The lack of any quality or class in the theatre itself would prevent me from being able to say the experience was anything other than disappointingly poor & over priced.

As good as the TV show. Opening night a couple of fluffed lines but as a person who fluffs her lines regularly in every day life this just made it better for me! A pity Shakespeare's dad, mum and wife are not in it but the story is very good and the link between Shakespeare's classics and 'issues' of the day are Ben Elton at his best. Highly recommended.

Went to see 'To kill a mockingbird' That was excellent. The theatre is nice - quite small so you can't get lost, and the stage is never too far. We did order the drinks in advance for the break - won't do that again. It was 2 G&T's at quite a high cost, It came in a paper bag but was at room temp. Would have been handy if next to the collection point you had a bucket of ice cubes as the point of advance ordering is to avoid the crowds in the bar, Apart from that, great

I always book stalls, but you can access a seating plan with views from each seat on the Gielgud Theatre website to help you decide. Enjoy the production!

Hi, what would you like to know about this attraction?
I'm going to see Les Miserables next month....please could you tell me which is the nearest Underground Station & how far is the theatre from there, please? My friend is disabled so trying to find the easiest way to get there for her...don't mind going on the bus either...we will be travelling from Liverpool St Station!! Many thanks indeed...Marion

The nearest tube station is picadilly circus. Leave by Shaftesbury Avenue exit and it is about 5 mins walk. Hope this helps

Hi Does anyone know what the view is like from the stall Box C? As with all boxes it's at the side, but it's priced as a premium ticket. Thanks
Written 31 July 2019
I usually find the seat view for the theater online. I would check that out. There were a number of seats in this particular theater that had partially obstructed views. That was why I decided on a premium seat.

Does anyone have experience on the view from seats J18 and J19. Heard a lot about uncomfy seats and sitting between heads and being 5”8 didn’t know if this would be a problem.
Written 22 May 2019
Hi - I visited the Gielgud in January for the show Company and we were seated in Stalls O12 & 11 and we were pleasantly surprised how good they were. I'm 5' 7" and average build and found the rake at Row O pretty good and the seats were staggered so you could see between heads in front. The seats were also comfy, legroom good and I didin't feel hemmed in by my neighbours. However, you might like to visit Seatplan where you can see customer seat reviews for most of the London theatres and in many cases folk will have posted a photo from their seat. It seems that Row J may be poorly raked and there are a number of folk complaining about tall heads in front of them. The other site for theatre seat reviews is Theatremonkey. Hope you may find this helpful. Regards, Will T

What will the view from Row R seats 10/11/12 be like?

I have looked at the seating plan and reviews online. They say that you will get average views. The nearer the centre of the row the better.

We were in row E of the Dress Circle and the view was fine. It is a beautiful old theater and the seats seemed a bit low to me and I'm only 5'-8". On the other hand my wife who is 5'-3" thought they were perfect because she usually finds seat cushions to be too high to be comfortable. There are two intermissions to allow welcome stretches. I don't recall any restricted viewing areas - at least in the center portions of the theater. I'd think that unless you're unusually tall the performance is well worth any minor seating issues you may experience.

Grand Circle?
Can anyone give me an idea of the view from up in the grand circle? Many thanks :)
Written 8 April 2017
We had £10 restricted view seats at the back of the Grand Circle. There was only one point in the production when our view was actually restricted (actors were all right at front of the stage). Depends on your budget and expectations of course but we were happy with our tickets.
Written 9 April 2017
Hi,
Can anyone that has sat in the 2nd row comment on visibility? Is there anything blocking your view and are you straining your neck upward or anything to watch the stage?
Also anyone that has sat in the the first or last 2 seats in rows F,E, or G. Do these have full views of the stage, just at an angle?
Thank you
Written 22 February 2017
hi, we sat four rows back but I can't see you would have many issues view wise. However it would depend on the performance you are seeing and the staging. We saw The Curious Incident and the staging is minimal with most action at the front and centre stage.
Written 26 February 2017
What are the grand (upper) circle row AA seats like? Those are the cheapest seats in house, at the side of the balcony.. Are they any good? Or is the view too restricted to enjoy the performance?
