- Flashback2024Essex, United Kingdom56 contributionsWorth a visit if in the areaThis market is about 10 minutes walk from Tower Bridge (on the South side of the river), it is busier on weekends with food places. It is basically one street and you can walk around to get to the other side. I used to visit from time to time, however a few of the antique places have moved on or closed down. They were interesting places to explore. This is a disappointment, as now it is more about food. It is less interesting for me. One weekends it is busier, but on weekdays it can be quieter. This is hidden part of London, slightly off the beaten track.Visited January 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 13 November 2023
- Andrew DBrighton, United Kingdom67 contributionsGreat off-track food venue. It's an interesting market a little off the beaten trac, offering something different to the vastness that is Borough Market. We found a couple of nice pubs nearby, some interesting shops, and we had some amazing lunch from one of the stalls for under ÂŁ10. So, we love it there. You do have to walk through a bit of a dodgy looking area to get there though. Don't be wearing a Rolex or waving around an iPhone 15 !Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2023
- SesentasSomerset, United Kingdom104 contributionsFantastic one street marketOur first visit on a cold December morning. Although small, the sheer variety of outdoor food stalls/indoor restaurants makes this a great alternative market to the more crowded and perhaps overwhelming Borough Market. Good setup with outdoor tables and counters to sit at. We chose The Greek Pot which had delicious food at reasonable prices and generous portions—outstanding moussaka!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 December 2023
- TheBubblerLondon, United Kingdom14 contributionsGreat international food made locallyA very cool vibrant international street food market with some nice design shops, organic supermarket and a florist tucked away for good measure. A go to location when we're hungover and need food, a great option to drag friends to if nobody can decide on what to eat. Just don't expect to find seating if it's peak timeVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 April 2024

Came down here after searching for a hidden gem for street food, wasn't disappointed. It is small HOWEVER the food choices well made up for that; grilled cheese sandwiches, oysters, po boys, waffles, curry, falafel.... the list goes on. Well cooked and very appetising food. There are a couple of bars/cafes too. I found it highly enjoyable on a drizzly January Sunday! There is also a very delightful shop selling ornaments, baskets, chairs, tiling etc most of which is recycled and/or reclaimed or made from natural materials. Picked up a couple of wonderful bits in there. Definitely worth a visit but it is probably a fifth the size of borough so don't go thinking it's huge!

I’ve long seen Maltby Street on the map as another trendy Bermondsey destination noting it’s home to a bakery beneath the arches as an outpost of the St. John culinary empire. But Maltby Street Market is somewhat distinct from the street following beneath a metal entrance arch the line of railway arches at the point the street deviates in a slightly different direction. It’s a Mecca of small cafes, bars and take-away outlets of all description and even in this rather cold mid Sunday afternoon in a rising tide of Covid seemed to be doing a roaring trade with most seats at the outdoor tables full. Of all the stalls it was the one selling fresh fish which tempted me the most.

Located in a narrow back street that is little more than an alleyway tucked away behind the railway arches, this is perhaps an unusual location for a renowned food market, but I had read about it on several occasions and was keen to stop off whilst we were completing the Bermondsey Beer Mile.
Most of the stalls are providing food to eat “on the go” rather than ingredients to take away and cook with. We certainly weren’t after a full on meal, so just opted for some Scotch eggs. Not cheap at £3 each, but they were a generous size and the chorizo one certainly had a spicy kick. That said, the sausage meat was a lot courser than I would have liked. Overall, I’m glad I popped in here as I was passing, but can’t help feeling I might have been a little disappointed if I had made a special journey.

We visited Maltby Street Market while we were in the area. The market is set up along Ropewalk under the arches of the main railway line on the approaches into London Bridge. There was a huge variety of food stalls, restaurants and bars. There is a great vibe to the place with delicious aromas from the stalls hanging in the air. We stopped off at one of the outlets for empanadas, it was one of the many stalls with freshly prepared and reasonably priced treats. It was very quiet when we visited but it was nice to be able to enjoy the market without the crowds.

Maltby Market was a delightful surprise during my trip to London. The vibrant atmosphere and diverse array of stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal goods, and delicious street food made it a perfect spot for a culinary adventure. The friendly vendors were more than happy to share their stories and recommend their favorite dishes. The market's location was also convenient, allowing easy access to other attractions in the area. A great place to experience the local flavor of London and grab a bite to eat.I bought a railcard on trainpal and got a 20% discount when I entered the RC777E code! Hope to help those who come to the UK to play~

Love this Market but have concerns about safety in the current climate. Not the fault of the businesses who deserve to survive and thrive, but there are too many customers who don't understand social distancing and don't think of others as they chat in groups and make it impossible for others to pass by safely. Perhaps it needs to be one way .. I hope a safe solution can be found.?

I gave three stars because my expectations were underwhelmed. I read somewhere that in addition to food vendors, there were also antique vendors as well; there were none.
The market was crowded with a wide selection of ethnic foods. So, the market seemed good, but again, my expectations were not met.

Are there toilet facilities nearby?
Written 29 January 2024
Not public toilets. Some of the bars, may have toilets. There may be toilet at the foothills of Towerbridge (under the bridge, but I am not sure).

What are the trading times/hours during Christmas 2015?
Written 9 October 2015
Hi, I'm not really sure. Try googling it in about four weeks time. You might also want to look and see if there is a website for the Ropewalk which is the alternative name for this market. I hope that's of help.
