Neighbourhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.

Great theatre for a great show.
Jul. 2021
I went to the Wednesday matinee of Amelie and had an amazing experience. I arrived bang on half 2 (I'm usually very good at arriving at theatres on time) and the staff was extremely helpful when I arrived. Covid restrictions were still fully in place and from what i could see most people were following the rules. The drinks are reasonably priced for a theatre. Tickets are relatively affordable with the cheapest being £15 to the most expensive being £75. The atmosphere of the criterion is very unique as it is technically underground. Amelie is an amazing musical being hosted in an amazing independent and historically significant theatre. I highly recommend it.

Well organised anti_Covid and loos for women!
Jun. 2021
Went to see Amelie here last week. Staff were helpful with husband's mobility issues. Amazingly, they have uprated the ladies' loos so the normal nightmare of getting into one didn't exist (I know it was only half full, but still - it's the worst aspect of most West End theatres.

Slapstick - if you like that kind of thing
Jul. 2020 • Couples
This is quite a late review of a visit in June 2019. The show was The Bank Robbery That Goes Wrong. The venue is a traditional London theatre with all the close seating and crowd atmosphere that goes with it. Great location. The show is a bit slapstick so not really our cup of tea, hence the low score.

Amelie The Musical
Jun. 2021
A sweet production, though it meandered on a bit for me. Audrey Brisson in the lead role is absolutely made for it & is cannily similar to Audrey Tautou who played Amelie in the film. She is diminutive in stature but has magnetic stage presence, in addition to having a delightful singing voice. The set is excellent & the Mary Poppins style flying effects just brilliant. There are fun elements, most particularly an Elton John sketch which was a hoot.
The Criterion is an intimate & characterful theatre, really suited to this production.

Extremely poor front of house experience...please teach them some basic manners!
May 2021 • Solo
Perfect place to go if you want to be scolded like a naughty child by the front of house male members of staff. Firstly told off for saying I didn’t receive a text message and asked to prove it by showing my phone! Second telling off was when the NHS app showed an error. Thankfully it’s a theatre I seldom visit and it’s completely unprofessional in comparison to the others! The female ushers and female bar staff were lovely just a shame the others let it down. I’m all for supporting the reopening of theatres but this is one I will definitely avoid going forward...Hopefully the play Amelie which has great reviews makes up for the diabolical start to the evening!

Wonderful staff, safe covid restrictions
Jun. 2021 • Solo
Absolutely wonderful experience, front-of-house were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was relaxed and pre-show drinks arrived quickly.

P.S. Don't mind bad review from Alan V, he was just cranky that he had to wear a PPE mask during Covid-19 restrictions. The appalling thing is Alan V's behaviour.

Appalled by Insolent Team Member

Absolutely appalled at the service from @CriTheatre tonight and the young lady with such an attitude. I am singularly one of the most supportive of arts in London. With 3 theatre trips weekly. To be treated with such insolence astounds me.

Great theatre
Jun. 2021
I came to see Amelie here for a matinee performance, the entrance was really well-done socially distanced and efficient. The staff were all really lovely and friendly and couldn’t do enough to help. They were also vigilant about mask-wearing which I really appreciated as this was my first time back in a theatre since last year.

I was In the upper circle seat A15 and it was a great seat for the price, I had a clear and very good view of the stage. It was an aisle seat so I could stretch my leg to the side a bit as the legroom isn’t massive. There was an in-seat drinks service but I didn’t use it it is a beautiful and small theatre I would happily come and see a show again here.

Side note the show its self was brilliant you should defiantly go and see it whilst its on you won't be disappointed

Great show in a really safe environment
May 2021
Fantasticly well run front of house during covid restrictions
Easy website for checking in and ordering drinks
Check in staff really friendly and efficient
Lots of socialy distanced space ( whole rows removed ) which meant more legroom as well.
Drinks brough to your seat. FOH staff politely reminded people to wear masks during the show
Controlled exit from the theatre at the end
The show ( Amelie ) was excellent.
Well done team.
PS Visited another show the next day at a theatre around the corner - not really as well run or as safe.

Great theatre, great actors
Mar. 2020 • Family
Very much enjoyed our family visit to this theatre to watch a "Comedy about a Bank Robbery." Relatively small, welcoming theatre in the heart of London (just next to Eros statue in Picadilly). Great comedy, well acted and great use of the space.
