The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

We visited this memorial with our three children (aged between 1 and 6), and they loved it. Our 4 and 6 year old sat and drew Queen Victoria and wanted to know all about it. It’s an iconic monument to Queen Victoria right in front of the Queen’s London residence and worth a stroll across the road from Buckingham Palace to see its majestic statues up close.

It is a beautiful when photographed against a clear blue morning sky.

The upper terrace level is a good place to view the Changing of the Guards Ceremony.

The smaller sculptures and reliefs that form the base are also beautiful.

Standing at the end of The Mall, right in front of Buckingham Palace, is an 82ft marble memorial to Queen Victoria.

It is one of the most iconic sights in London, perhaps due to its proximity to the aforementioned Buckingham Palace, and remains the tallest monument to a British monarch in the country.

The principle part of the memorial comprises of a central column (or pylon) and is made of Pentelic marble. Atop this is a gilded bronze representation of a winged Victory, whilst below are a series of smaller accompanying statues representing personifications of Constancy and Courage, as well as two eagles with their wings outstretched. These are made of Lasa marble.

Below these statues is a statue of Queen Victoria herself, facing symbolically towards the City, flanked by representations of Motherhood, Truth and Justice - all synonymous with Queen Victoria.

It was King Edward VII who proposed the building of this monument and it was agreed that it would not be paid for by the government. Instead it was funded by various countries across the Empire/Commonwealth as well as donations by members of the public.

Sadly King Edward VII never got to see it dedicated officially as he passed away before. Instead it was King George V who had that particular honour.

We've all seen this memorial, be it whenever we walk down The Mall, or watching the various televised events from Buckingham Palace over the years, as it is very much a focal points for the throngs of people that congregate at these events.

This is a stunning monument(s) and is every much a part of London as Big Ben or Marble Arch, and is one of those incredible places that I hardly need to sell to you.

The Queen Victoria Memorial is located directly in front of Buckingham Palace. A bronze angel on the top is impressive. The area is apparently closed to traffic on Sundays and holidays, which makes it very easy to explore the area.

A stunning memorial topped with a gilded statue pay tribute to Queen Victoria. This large memorial is directly in from of Buckingham Palace and the Canada Gate and cannot be missed. While not as interesting as some of the public sculpture in Italy, it is tastefully carved with a fair amount of interesting detail.

We had a look around the Queen Victoria Memorial Fountain whilst visiting London. It is right at the end of The Mall directly in front of the palace. The memorial is huge and well detailed. People have thrown coins in the water and I think they've been there ages as the area around them has discoloured. Surprised they've not been pinched! It is very busy around the memorial and a lot of people sit on it so prepare to wait for photos etc.

I was only in London 2 days but stayed right by the palace . I walked from my hotel thru St James park bc I had never seen Buckingham Palace before ! ( it’s my 2nd London visit but I hated touristy places w the long lines etc ) I was blown away at this incredible memorial ! They were doing all sorts of construction all around the palace so it was rather ugly and “cut up “ ( ie: roads not accessible etc ) but this memorial took my breath away ! The sheer size of the statues lying around the gorgeous gold center . Just be sure you see these incredible parks near the palace ! I plan to stay next summer a week or so just to walk thru Hyde park too!
That’s what you want to see in London not “ the sites “
Instead try walking thru St James and see the ducks all the beautiful grounds etc .then walk on through to Fortnum & Mason & get yourself a picnic to take back ! . So much better than fighting crowds at the museums etc !
Haha !

This is a great memorial to a great queen. It is full of symbolism and the English do this very well! At the top of the memorial is the winged victory, a magnificent symbol for Victoria's reign. Additionally there are several other symbols, about stability, power, motherhood, justice and the Empire, all about Victoria and her legacy. And, of course, there is the queen herself, sitting amongst them all, gazing in the distance, watching everyone, making sure we all acknowledge the great queen and her achievements! It is a magnificent monument, located right outside Buckingham Palace. You can't miss it!
