Joined a free tour (donations appreciated) through the remaining areas of St. John's Gate. Thought you knew about St. John Ambulance? This is the story of how it evolved from monks, crusaders, Knights of Hospitalers, to present day first aid teachers and providers. Great history here.

After visiting the Museum of the Order of St John you can walk over for a look at the Priory. I attended Opera by candlelight here which was lovely. It would have been better if they had dimmed the lights and had candles. I was disappointed that the crypt wasn't open but I will do that another time. The garden... More

Fantastic visit! The lady went out of her way to help us! As I am a member of the order I got to see a few things extra with my husband who not in the organization! It is worth seeing it if you interested in the history of St John Ambulance. Oh yes, also free to see but a donation... More

As a member of St John Ambulance being able to visit a place linked to the history was really good. Members of the public are able to go round the St John's Gate Museum and can be booked onto tours that take you into other areas of the building including the really old meeting rooms upstairs that are still used... This is a surprising little gem in the middle of Clerkenwell, it's a former Priory that housed the Hospitaller's who were Knight's in The Order of St John - there are daily tours conducted by qualified guides, who will tell you about its colourful past.

Came here on a private visit with the Friends of the Royal Academy. It is almost unknown to tourists and looks small from the outside, but the tour was fascinating. There is so much of historical interest and I definitely recommend the guided tour which will show you the Gate and the Priory Church. After the tour we had free... More

Come for the gate and stay for the museum and crypt. It's free and in the oldest section of London, not far from Smithfield's market (where William Wallace was put to death) and the Monument and Tower Hill area. The museum tells the story of The Order of St. John that continues to this date. They were kicked out by... More

We didn't coincide our visit time to join a guided tour which might have been worthwhile so only saw the exhibits. There were 5 short consecutive video presentations giving a short history of the Order of St John. Fascinating and as we were almost the only people there it was very relaxing. A museum with a difference.

Our tour guide started promptly at 1100 and proceeded to give all 7 members of us a very interesting one and a half hour tour(optional £5 payment) around St.John's Gate and the Priory Church. 35 years ago I actually worked within 100 yards of St.John's Gate and had no idea that it existed.A fascinating place that goes back to before... The tour is definitely worth doing if you can. I found this very interesting. It gave a large amount of information about the Order of St John and St John Ambulance. Only a short walk from Farringdon tube station.

Staying in Clerkenwell

Neighbourhood Profile
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.
