I've just spent the day at an all-day business meeting in one of those wonderful places that so many people don't know about, I didn't even know it existed. The Tudor gate is spectacular and hidden on a little street off the Clerkenwell Road and is the museum for the "Knights Hospitallers", that we know as St John Ambulance nowadays.... More

It is a small museum and shouldn't take long to get round (we didn't visit the church or the crypt). That said it is worth a visit, especially if you want to find out more about the history of this order and how St Johns ambulance came about. ( We have been to Malta so a trip to this museum... I found the museum by accident and was curious to explore it. Order of St John has a fascinating history spanning out through centuries. There is a temple, the court and the crypt as well as museum to be seen.

Looking for somewhere to visit before catching an afternoon train from Kings Cross, I chose to visit this museum in Clerkenwell which is a short walk from the Farringdon Road. There are regular guided tours which are highly recommended as they take you to areas of the museum which are not normally accessible, and also to the priory church and... More

We loved it. The museum is small and focuses on the history of the order rather than the current work of the St John Ambulance (check out the website thoroughly). The most interesting parts can only be seen on a tour which lasted just over 1 hour and was well worth the suggested donation of £5. Our guide was tremendous;... More

The museum is small, and there isn't much in way of exhibitions about the current work of St John. The optional tour of the gate, the gardens and the church was well worth going on, the guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

My daughter is a St John Ambulance volunteer and particularly wanted to see the museum during our recent visit to London. We chose to visit on a Sunday and unfortunately the tube was closed so after taking both the tube and bus followed by a walk we found the museum. There are no signposts to navigate to museum. Museum has... More

This venue is full of character and the team running the museum were so professional. The building has fantastic architecture. The wedding room upstairs was a fitting backdrop to a fantastic wedding. The museum itself is well worth a visit.

We had a delightful volunteer guide take us around this museum which has sets out the history of the Order of St John from the time it was first founded through to it becoming St Johns Ambulance. The only way to get into parts of the building is on one of these guided tours (check website for days and times)... More

Staying in Clerkenwell

Neighbourhood Profile
Clerkenwell
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.
