Neighbourhood: Marylebone
Marylebone offers what so many London neighbourhoods cannot: a village feel coupled with urban convenience. Much of its success rests in its location. Wedged between the northeastern corner of Hyde Park and the southern end of Regent's Park and with a number of Tube stations within easy reach, Marylebone is as pedestrian friendly as Central London gets. The bustling shopping mecca of Oxford Street separates it from Soho and Mayfair, exclusive Regent Street marks its border with Fitzrovia, and cosmopolitan Edgware Road serves as its western edge. Within this enviably situated quarter are an array of outstanding restaurants (from Michelin darlings to down and dirty cheeseburgers), an impressive assortment of independently owned shops, and some of the city's quietest and most pleasant nooks, crannies and cobbled lanes.

- BluexandeeUnited Kingdom345 contributionsSo interestingGreat visit. Waiting time about 10 mins. Buy your tickets in the shop & then queue. Probably the politest place in London. People wait for you and don’t try to pass you on the stairs but wait. Amazing! You get up and down the stairs at your own pace. The stairs were no steeper than my stairs at home. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The shop is fab - full of interesting items.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 September 2023
- Pikid71Lansing, Michigan31 contributionsFun for Sherlock Holmes Fans!Take a step back in time to the era of Sherlock Holmes. A very fun experience to see an excellent example of Georgian architecture and period antiques. Recommend that you pair with the Sherlock Holmes walking tour in London on Walks.com and stop into the Sherlock Holmes pub to get the complete Sherlock Holmes experience.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 October 2023
- bun 🐇Orlando, Florida91 contributionsbeautiful! but lacking greatlybeautifully decorated but very small and had limited information/things to see and do. a character as big as sherlock holmes could have had much more but this was honestly lackluster. price was crazy expensive for what it was save your money and just go visit the gift shopVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- mjMaryland94 contributionsDon’t miss thisAbsolutely recommend if you’re in London. It’s small but well organized and there’s great attention to detail. The museum brings Holmes to life making him larger than life. As a Sherlockian scholar I was well impressed! The staff is lovely and very friendly. You can tell they enjoy being in character. You can enjoy it in under an hour and is really worth adding this to your itinerary.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- Gjjh4Sunderland, United Kingdom6 contributionsMagnificent Watson! Simply MagnificentReally enjoyed here . Queueing time was short and staff are very friendly at the door , including a greeting Victorian policeman . Once inside the house is small but packed with Sherlock Holmes type artificers . The guide on the study floor was really good , knowledgeable and easy to listen to , making the whole experience a lot of fun . You’re then free to explore the other level on your own . Shop is good to . Not overly priced , and we’ll stocked with stuff you might not find elsewhere . Overall a great visitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2023
- Paul B58 contributionsGreat Sunday ExperienceHaving wanted to visit for many years finally decided on last Sunday. Got there before lunch and already there was a queue. Despite the rain we managed to get tickets easily ( TIP: tickets before Queue) and only had to wait for about 30 minutes (normally a lot longer). They let you in small groups and you go to the 1st Floor to meet the Guide who tells you about the history of Sherlock. You are then free to go up to the 2nd and 3rd floors at your own pace. Being a Sherlock fan I recognised the scenes depicted and admired much of what makes the story credible. The house really does look like stepping back in time and the amount of history is incredible. The staff are dressed in the attire for the period and are very friendly if you have any questions. You can also visit the shop which has lots of memorabilia and other items to purchase. In all the visit was approximately half an hour and was vey enjoyable. Would visit again!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 31 October 2023
- ANDREA PWolverhampton, United Kingdom161 contributionsSherlock HolmesTickets £16.00. We booked it online before our trip to London. Very polite and helpful man at the door of the museum. Obviously this is a fictional detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle so we were thrown a bit by the start for the museum tour when the lady was talking as if he was real, but I suppose it just makes it a bit more interesting, I guess. Lots of items you would expect to have found during this period of time. Rooms set up as you'd image they would look like from the books and films you have seen. It took us about 30 minutes to go around but if you were to read the information available thoroughly it would take longer. For Sherlock Holmes fans it's a place to visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- Jane HBig Lake, Alaska10 contributionsMystery of where to have fun is solved!Beautiful furnishings and attention to detail make this small museum very big in fun. Take your time and look carefully at everything on a wall, in a case, or on the floor. So clever to have the story excerpts that go along with many of the props. Makes me want to read them all over again. Acting interpreters add to the atmosphere, and are very willing to answer questions.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- MardyLassEast Riding of Yorkshire, United Kingdom105 contributionsShort, overpriced visitYou've got to admire the entrepreneurship of those who run this museum. Obviously quite a bit of work has gone into setting it up, furnishing the rooms in a Victorian style with various objects which could be said to have an association with the Sherlock Holmes stories, but £16 for a 30 minutes (at most) visit is rather excessive. You buy your tickets in the shop next door and then queue outside until sufficient people are congregated to be allowed in. The guides. doorman and shop assistants are all in Victorian dress - you are led to an upstairs room where you are told about Sherlock Holmes' life in the house - as if he was a real living person and no mention of Conan Doyle. Then there are a few more small rooms and that is it.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- StephToronto, Canada234 contributionsA must for any Sherlock fanI had a great time at the museum. They took care to recreate the rooms of Sherlock, John, and Mrs. Hudson. The staff were all lovely, a big shout out to Leslie, who played Mrs. Hudson and then was in the gift shop after. She was great and answered plenty of questions from myself and the other folks there. Having her as a guide really enhanced the rooms. So glad I finally got to take a pilgrimage to 221b.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 6 December 2023

Visited to indulge my inner nerd (I’m a big fan of both the novels and collated short stories, as well as most of the screen adaptations) and I was pretty disappointed.
The main issue is the price. At £15/adult I was really expecting big things; original takes, or new pieces of information, but the museum fell well short of my (now elevated by the admission) expectations.
The museum is situated in five or six very cramped rooms across a few stories, in each of which you can look at various Sherlock Holmes ‘artefacts’ (such as a deerstalker, a pipe, or a violin, in case you hadn’t seen them before). A couple of the rooms are decked out in a fashion typical of the period, but with limited space due to the number of visitors, you struggle to really notice it.
In other rooms, mannequins are decked out in Victorian costumes to bring a series of lazily curated passages from the books to life. Given in many cases the clothes don’t even match the character descriptions printed next to them, I would expect a child’s imagination to conjure up more compelling imagery.
I was hoping for more information on Arthur Conan Doyle - perhaps at least touching on his inspirations or experiences which helped bring his character to life. As the museum is smack bang in the centre of London, it would also be good to see some maps of the areas where the cases took place (I’d prefer this than looking at a plastic digit labelled “The Engineers Thumb”).
Have given two stars as the staff are lovely but compared to the Kafka museum in Prague, this is a really poor literary landmark, which is disappointing given the breadth and depth of subject matter to work from. Save your money and visit Daunt Books, around the corner.

I recently found out that this place existed, and I know the imcomparable SH is not a real person but as a fan I just knew I had to go there and get it out of my system.
Well, I'm not sure what I really expected, but it certainly wasn't there.
The entry price of £15 was ridicoulously high for the exhibits on offer.
Most of the exhibits, in fairness, were about as good as I could expect for a fictictious character, others were genuinely pure padding, like the stuffed birds that popped up in certain places. The overall 'museum' was tiny for such a price
So who does it appeal to? Mainly japanese and other tourists, of course!!
This is an unashamedly blatant tourist trap, and not even at 221B Baker Street
Stay Away!!

Went to the Sherlock Holmes Museum today and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it was incredible. The staff were very friendly, helpful and pleasant who guided you to the next floors of the building. Every room was filled with nice, quaint and dainty items that belonged to Sherlock and Dr John Watson along with figures of who Sherlock has come across in his path and descriptions about them. Would recommend anyone to go to the museum if you're a fan of the TV series with Benedict Cumberbatch or the classic novels.

Hugely disappointed.
I really thought it was overpriced for the very short amount of time you need to spend there and I am not sure who this "museum" would appeal too. Fans will get nothing out of it, nor will those who don't know much about Sherlock Holmes. Really you get a few rooms crammed with Victorian objects and dummies.
You are obliged to go with a group into the first two rooms to listen to an audio which was ok but given that we are still in uncertain times, everyone was standing on top of each other due to the lack of space.
The staff are pleasant enough but please don't waste your money on it or the gift shop - serious consideration needs to be given on how to make this a worthwhile attraction.

My experience at the Sherlock Holmes Museum was disappointing. The waiting time for a walking ticket was extremely long, and the website advised me to take this option instead of booking a time slot. I ended up waiting for hours, which was frustrating and exhausting. The museum should have more efficient ticketing options to ensure that visitors do not waste their time waiting in long lines. The staff were not very helpful or accommodating, which made the experience even more unpleasant. On top of that, the museum visit itself lasts only 10 minutes, despite the tickets being very expensive. It's disappointing to spend so much money and time waiting for such a short visit. Overall, I would not recommend the Sherlock Holmes Museum to anyone due to the poor customer service and long wait times.

The museum occupies 3 floors, has rooms devoted to the two main characters, as well as a guide explaining some quirky stuff about Sherlock and Watson (only on one floor though). You can take photos and freely walk around. The collection is modest and focused on books not tv series. If you're a fan of Cumberbatch than sorry you won't see any references. I found the exhibition interesting because it helped me explore the times Sherlock lived in. Again it's a modest collection so the whole tour rooms us maybe 20 minutes.

Brilliant little museum. Obviously with Sherlock Holmes not being a real person, the museum is a collection of genuine Victorian antiques made to resemble what Sherlocks home would have looked like. There is a very short informative chat from a guide at the beginning of the tour, no more than 5 minutes, and then you are left to explore the rest of the museum yourself which would in total take roughly 20 minutes. Pre-booking is essential if you don’t want to wait in the queue of non-prebooked which I imagine could take quite a bit of time to get through. Upon arrival you collect your tickets from the shop next door before lining up in the queue outside. The shop is also a lovely little addition, I purchased a book which is the complete collection of Sherlock Holmes books for the cost of £30. Although it doesn’t take much time to get around, it’s definitely one of the quirkier and smaller gems to visit in London

If you’re really into Sherlock Holmes, I would assume that going into “his house” is worth the money. If you’re not really into him that much, know that, while this is a quaint and kind of lovely museum, it’s also really, really small.
We saw people arrive without tickets and be told that it would be an hour wait to get inside - that’s certainly not worth it, so make sure you buy your tickets in advance online. And even then, know that this is a small place and you’ll be outside probably in 20 minutes, if that much.
The shop is probably more interesting and fun to visit than the museum itself. And it’s free (well, they have cool Sherlock Holmes stuff so it’s probably still going to cost you money in the end :)).

What a waste of money and time.
Firstly if you think there will be any film props from the Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch or Robert Downey Jr TV shows or movies , there aren’t.
You can prepay but when you get to front of prepaid line your told to convert your ticket in the shop. Why not just have a barcode scanner. In the shop to convert your ticket you have to queue up with souvenir shoppers and when we went , there was only one til open.
I felt sorry for the dozens of people who hadn’t pre booked, they were waiting ages
When you go in you go straight up to a pair of Dingy Edwardian rooms where a guy talks about the room as if Sherlock Holmes lived there for real. It’s crowded and poorly done as are the next two floors. You are in there for about 20-30 mins and there is nothing to see really. It could be soooo much better if they linked up with the tv shows or films.
This is embarrassingly amateurish

What is the latest time is it possible to get in which still gives time to enjoy the trip.
Written 30 January 2017
If you want to visit on a specific date better check their opening hours as these may vary. I would say, go about one hour before closing time as it will give you plenty of time to enjoy the museum and take all the pictures you want.

Hello,
I was that kids entry cost 10£. Do kids under 5 should also pay?
Thanks.
Written 14 January 2017
We did not have children with use under 5 so, unfortunately I cannot answer your question. There would be little for them to enjoy, and in fact the wax figures of the characters may be a bit scary for little ones.
Written 26 January 2017
Is it possible to bring bags in with you while looking at the museum? Or is there somewhere on site where one can store their things? I would even be up for somewhere nearby. I am just traveling from london to manchester off of a plane from the states and I would like to know before I think about extending my time inbetween.
Written 2 January 2017
I believe you are referring to luggage and not a small backpack type. If that is the case, no, there is not anywhere to leave it and in fact, going into 221B for the exhibits is up some very small, steep stairs and it would be tough to bring up luggage. The rooms themselves, once you are in, are small and fill with antiques and displays.
