About
The Gallery shows a changing display of about 250 artworks from its collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture, in addition to a programme of temporary exhibitions. A rich variety of Victorian paintings can be seen as you enter the Gallery, displayed in original 19th century style. The collections illustrate the key artistic movements and influences of the Victorian period, from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, to Orientalism, Classicism and narrative painting. The Gallery's collection of London paintings opens a window onto unusual, memorable and colourful scenes from the city's history.

Address
Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

    This hit my sweet spot
I loved this gallery. It's quite hidden away in the City so I'm not sure it's on most people's tourist trail but the art is absolutely superb. There are plenty of places to take a seat and spend some time if you wish, but it's not so large as to feel overwhelming. It hit one of my favourite periods of art, focussing on the Victorian era, so I guess it depends on your tastes a bit. There was also an exhibition of art about London which was a bit more hit and miss, but on the whole I think this is a wonderful gallery.
It's not deliberately hidden! We are glad you were able to visit and thanks for taking the time to leave a positive review.

What a little gem of a free gallery
What a proper good find of a gem tucked away behind St Paul’s. Stumbled across this with 30mins before closing so didn’t get to see it all but what we did see was awesome. The Roman ruins in the basement literally and the Shakespeare documents a must see. Will be returning on our next trip to the big smoke to see the rest we missed. Staff were really friendly and the lady at the shop gave us a mini talk about the history. Beats many of the other free galleries in London hands down.

Art Gallery with access to the Roman amphitheatre
This free exhibit includes the remains of part of the Roman amphitheatre of London, a small exhibition on Sir Christopher Wren and another on Shakespeare, some London related paintings as well as the Art Gallery which shows a number of Victorian art pieces including some nice Pre-Raphaelite works. A good way to spend a quite hour. Note that you do not see the Guildhall itself.
Thank you for visiting Guildhall Art Gallery & London's Roman Amphitheatre. We're glad to hear you enjoyed your time looking at the permanent displays and the temporary exhibition 'Wren at Work', marking the tercentenary anniversary of Sir Christopher Wren's death.

    Hidden gem in plain sight
In all honesty we popped in here to get some respite from the torrential rain. It was actually a really interesting place to visit for an hour or so and see some great Victorian/Edwardian art and some later pieces. In addition, the remains of the Roman amphitheatre were an unexpected and delightful surprise.
It's a pleasure to provide you somewhere beautiful and inspiring to dry off. You are welcome to visit when the weather is good too!

    An undiscovered gem
Treasures in gold and silver wire is such a fabulous exhibition. The intricacy of the embroidery is something to behold. On display are items spanning many centuries for example a coffin pall, Queen Mary’s Coronation dress, The Queen’s Coronation glove, a Yeoman of the Guard outfit, Garter robes, David Tennant’s costume for Hamlet, Darcy Bussell’s tutu. All magnificent. Thankfully this exhibition has been extended. In addition the Art Gallery is a gem with over 3000 paintings owned by The Corporation of London, a sample of which are on display. I was lucky enough to join a free tour in which the knowledgeable guide talked about some of the collection. The tour also included a visit to the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre discovered during the excavations during the 1990s. A wonderful visit

    Breathtakingly beautiful
Went to the special exhibition of gold work. This was absolutely beautiful. The place was so quiet I was able to take my time and enjoy the sheer beauty and skill on display. The staff were lovely and I spoke to several other visitors so had a wonderful afternoon
We are very glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Guildhall Art Gallery and the temporary exhibition 'Treasures of Gold and Silver Wire'. Thank you for complimenting our staff and volunteers who work so hard welcoming all of our visitors. We hope you will consider visiting again in the future.

    A gem of a place
I love coming across unsung little gems in London and this place is one of them. Lovely, unexpected paintings of Lady Jane Grey,a stunning Clytemnestra,a Constable and the Roman remains of an amphitheatre, beautifully lit and explained. Very welcoming lady in the small shop. A great visit.
We are glad that you enjoyed your visit to Guildhall Art Gallery. The collection is full of interesting and surprising works of art! We will pass on your positive feedback to our Welcome and Shop Volunteers.

Free Entry to see Roman Amphitheatre Ruins and Art Pieces
The Guildhall offers free entry and you can make donations at the gift shop or by some of the exhibits. The highlight is definitely the history and ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre that was discovered here while they were building the Guildhall. Other highlights include the two story Gibraltar painting by John Singleton Copley, the Tower Bridge Exhibit, bust of then Prince Charles and a temporary exhibit on woodcutting and kaleidoscope inspired art by Anne Desmet. The Guildhall has a library that features the world's largest collection of books to a single city - London, large models of the city and a very nice washroom in the basement of the art gallery. This is an interesting spot to check out and you can save it for a rainy day and I would prioritize it for people interested in the Roman history of London or just London history in general. The Guildhall is close to St. Paul's and has a number of underground stations and bus stops nearby.
Thank you for leaving a review of Guildhall Art Gallery. We are glad to hear that you also enjoyed visiting the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre and the temporary exhibition Anne Desmet: Kaleidoscope/London. We just wanted to clarify that Guildhall Library and The London Centre (displaying the London models) are currently accessed from an entrance on Aldermanbury, not from Guildhall Art Gallery. We are glad to have great public transport links and other attractions to visit in the City nearby too! We hope that you will consider visiting again in the future. Please see our website for details of temporary exhibitions.

    There for the Roman ruins
You descend one level to view artifacts in cases and read about the history of the site. Then you descend one more level to view the parts that have been exposed. It is something to be down there among the ruins. Well worth a visit.

    Peaceful gallery
We popped in to the Guildhall Art Gallery as there is direct access to the Roman Ampitheatre below. However, it was a great opportunity to take in a bit of art and culture at the same time. They bad a specific exhibition on whilst we were there, called 'Kaleidoscope/London' and, whilst the artwork certainly wasn't to my taste, there was a short video, playing on a loop, which showed how the artist, Anne Desmet, created the pieces and this gave me an entirely new perspective and appreciation for the art on display. It is a remarkable process! The gallery is very smart and has a very nice peaceful feel to it. The staff were all very pleasant too. I should like to return here one day, and would encourage anyone to stop by if you're in The City.
We're glad to hear that you had a great visit to Guildhall Art Gallery and London's Roman Amphitheatre. We love hearing how visitors are surprised to discover one or the other in the same building! Thank you for the feedback about the temporary exhibition and the film explaining the wood engraving process. We hope that you find time to come back again in the future (in addition to the temporary exhibitions, the Heritage Gallery display is changed several times each year too). Please see our website for more information about both of these.

To be frank I rarely write reviews of anything in London since I live here and keep my reviews for my travels, However, in this peculiar year my travels are restricted to London so it seems reasonable to write reviews. I regularly visit the Guildhall Gallery and had wanted to see the temporary exhibition before lockdown. So I am pleased to see it now. Limited opening. Book on-line. Controlled numbers. Toilets. Hand sanitizer. Very nice temporary exhibition-Enchanted Interiors. Limited part opening of the permanent galleries. You can see many of the great Victorian paintings but the many of London not yet back. Go again.

The first impression is that this is a beautifully designed gallery. The quality of the building stands out. The paintings aren't quite top rate but some are very beautiful and others are of historical interest for their portrayal of London life. There's a hilarious statue of our future king! The galleries are spread out intriguingly and you can have a good stroll around. The Roman amphitheatre is likewise impressively presented; in fact the swish of the installation outshines the remains themselves. Very strongly recommend for a visit.

We went today to specifically see the Noel Coward Exhibition, which was free with my National Art Pass. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life work of Mr. Coward. The exhibition details his childhood through to his old age. We found out about where he lived, saw artefacts that were in his various homes and saw numerous photographs, programmes and paintings associated with his life. I didn't realise how much he had written and performed. He was also an artist and some of his pantings are displayed. Detailed also of the important friends in his life. The outfits that were worn by his leading ladies and even some of Mr. Coward's own clothes were on display. There were also film clips of him and his friends and clips from his films. A truly comprehensive account of his life. Wonderful!

I wish I had discovered the Guildhall Art Gallery sooner! From the moment of arriving the staff and volunteers were friendly and the free guided tour was great. The guide highlighted various paintings that I might have missed and they all have fascinating stories behind them. How lucky we are to have the volunteers who give them time and knowledge so generously. A great collection of paintings and the facilities are spotless. The Noel Coward exhibition was a bonus and I hope to visit both again soon! Thanks you for all your hard work.

Hi Roving488978. Thanks for your review. We're so grateful to all of our volunteers and the City Guides as well; we think they do a fantastic job as well! For your information, the Noël Coward: Art & Style exhibition runs until 23 December 2021. The Gallery and Amphitheatre will re-open after a short break over Christmas and New Year and we have a new temporary exhibition opening in 2022.

We had not planned on visiting this gallery (didn’t even know it existed!) , and just popped in as we were passing.

It is beautifully curated, with the exhibits in themes and lots of London paintings. Even more unexpected were the Roman amphitheatre remains in the basement.

And all this was free! Recommended.

How have I never found this beautiful gallery before? It is absolutely entrancing and I can’t wait to return. I went for the Noel Coward exhibition which was delightful but spent more time wandering around the gallery and finding paintings that I recognised but never knew were housed here! To add to my excitement, the remains of a Roman amphitheatre wonderfully displayed in the depths. Lovely lady in reception made me feel welcome. Just a shame it doesn’t have a coffee shop.

Hello Laura. Thank you very much for your comments and we hope you will consider coming back for our next temporary exhibition in the new year. We'd love to have a coffee shop as well, but unfortunately to fit one in we would have to take some artworks off display, which we don't think would be worth it.

Have been here many times and it never disappoints. We went to the Noel Coward exhibition first - a small and very interesting exhibition detailing the varied and interesting life of this man. My only criticism is that the captions are in small type. This is ok when reading at eye level but some of the captions are near the floor and it is impossible to read these without bending down, difficult for some people! Afterwards we had a look round at the themed gallery on the first floor and there are some beautiful and interesting paintings here. A small shop sells good quality souvenirs. You can also peek at the roman amphitheatre in the basement, but this is not open to wander round, due to covid.

Thank you for your review and constructive feedback. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the exhibition design and wanted to let you know that we take this feedback very seriously; we will be making changes so that our next exhibition opening in 2022 is more accessible. We're sorry if you thought the amphitheatre was closed - you should have been able to get into the basement by following the one-way route. Thankfully it's not going anywhere so you will still be able to see it next time you visit!

Was in London with my wife for a weekend, and we have done all the major sites to see in the city, and with my visits now I like to take the chance to visit the countless number of free museums and art galleries that the city has to offer that go under the radar.

We had planned to visit the National Gallery, but could not get a booking slot, and after looking around the Guildhall Art Gallery came not behind, and it had plenty of times.

Located not far from St Paul's and Bank Tube Station in the east end of the City of London, its easily accessible.

Not the biggest, but you could easily spend a good 2 hours here, and at our time of visit they had a exhibition on the life and times of Noël Coward (who I really only knew as Mr Bridger in the Italian Job) and after this visited the Roman Amphitheatre (worth doing if you plan to visit the near by Museum of London) and the full time exhibition.

Just the right size that you can kill a couple of hours, but not over powering that you will be left drained by the end of it.

Lovely small gallery with friendly staff. Went early on a weekday so there weren't many people around and I had the Roman amphitheatre to myself, really interesting to just sit and soak it in! Free admission or pay what you want, I think the collection is completely worth a small donation and I happily bought a few postcards of some of my favourite paintings on display.
