The South London Gallery is an internationally acclaimed contemporary art space which has been free to the public since its foundation in 1891. The gallery opened on its present site on Peckham Road in 1891 as the South London Fine Art Gallery and Library. Its founding mission to “bring art to the people of south London” is a vision which continues to hold true to this day and with a particular emphasis in the past twenty years, in showing challenging new work by emerging and established British and international artists.

Came to gallery via an article in the National Art Fund magazine about a brick garden by artist Gabriel Orozco. Very interesting project, nice time lapse video about the construction, unusual serene place. Further exhibitions in main gallery. Good spot to go when in area.

The south London Gallery is not very populated with tourist but it is nice to watch. The adjacent book shop is also great.

We read an article about an exhibit at SLG and decided to take a look. To be honest I'd never heard of the place and only been to Peckham once. We got the train to Peckham Rye (I wouldn't recommend this route as it's a long walk to the gallery). The gallery space is very small but nicely laid out,... More

Maybe I am a little weird but when I visit an art gallery, I expect to see some art on display. I don't go to eat in artisan cafes or to buy expensive art books from a gift shop. I want to see paintings and sculptures and installations that will please me, provoke me or leave me non-plussed. A few... More

Peckham is not best known for its culture, however the SLG is more than worth a visit. This gallery can offer many pleasant surprise and a nice day out with friends and family. The cafe is friendly and worth trying even if you're not an art lover.

We came along to see the Iraq exhibition, which had a small but excellent selection of paintings, cartoons, installations and a film plus interactive spaces. It was a thought provoking insight into life into everyday Iraqi life and culture. The space itself is very open and exudes a sense of well-being. the icing on the cake is the lovely cafe.... More

Strange how great things can be right under your nose but you just don't get around to checking them out as often as you should do. Well for this resident of Nunhead the South London Gallery is a case in point; it's no more than a very leisurely 15 minute stroll from door to door but this Sunday was my... More
