Top ways to experience Charterhouse Square and nearby attractions
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Clerkenwell
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.

This square and its gardens are just round the corner from both the Barbican complex and the Smithfield Meat Market, but its true relevance goes back into mediaeval times when The Charterhouse was established as a Priory in 1371 and formed much of two sides of the square. This remains a private foundation, but can be visited by the public. The central gardens are fairly plain now, but were far more ornate in previous times. They were used as a burial ground for victims of the Black Death some twenty years before the establishment of The Charterhouse. More modern history is represented by Florin Court block of flats next door, which are famous as the place where the fictional detective Hercule Poirot lived in what was re-named for the television series as Winchester House. Also located in the square is the up market Malmaison hotel and down an alleyway can be found the excellent restaurant Cafe du Marche. There is a pagoda on one side of the central gardens near the Carthusian Street entrance gate, under which there are information boards telling the stories of some of the famous historic characters associated with the square. No visitor to this part of London should miss this location. So much history to explore.

The gardens have a grizzly history - they sit on the site of the burial ground for those who died in the Black Death (1348-9). Today they are an oasis of peace, surrounded by buildings of different dates including the Charterhouse on the north - well worth a visit - a new developments on the southwest corner. As you glimpse out of the Square you can see the 19th century architecture of Smithfield Market, which itself is due for a massive transformation as the new Museum of London and a major concert hall. In the distance you can see the towers of the Barbican.
Note the fascinating design of the cast iron supports to the seats in the Square.

A Lovely tranquil square that we happened upon when visiting Malmaison for lunch. The Charterhouse which stands on the square is well worth a visit.
