If you go along you will see workmen, and the cafe and entrance boarded up. A new and rejuvenated Gallery will open 2018

Its all boarded up and looks like a prison camp as it being refurbished or demolished. I was hoping to see a modern art gallery.

As a part of the South Bank Centre, the gallery was designed as an example of the “Brutalist” style by a group of young architects in 1968 and named after Sir Isaac Hayward, the former leader of the London City Council. It is one of the most important galleries for contemporary art in London, but it is closed until next... More

I've been a fan of the Hayward Gallery for more than thirty years! Some of the exhibits have been fabulous, including such as Renoir, Gilbert and George, Andy Warhol, and Rodin. And of course there have been the more "modernistic" avant garde genre represented! Unfortunately the Hayward Gallery, Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth II Hall are closed for two years... More

A gallery which I always love to visit! I went here regularly when I lived in London and there are many great exhibitions I saw here. During my last visit in London in August 2015 I was fortunate enough to be able to see the exhibition "Decision" by Carsten Holler, which was so much fun! Unfortunately, due to the weather... More

I have been visiting this gallery since the early 1980s. It is a constituent part of the Southbank Centre. Because of its 'Brutalist' architecture it has been reviled by many because of its appearance but 'Brutalism' derives from the French for 'raw', and this building with its raw concrete finish and lack of aesthetic refinements and ornamentations is a prime... Fantastic small gallery in a prime position on the south bank. Go there for the best cutting edge exhibitions and extra special retrospectives.

If you have not been to see the Carsten Holler exhibition at the Hayward Gallery I suggest you rush over now. It ends next weekend. Even if you 'hate' contemporary art I urge you to go. This could well be the exhibition that opens your eyes to the wonder of contemporary art. There is also a 'work' of exquisite beauty... More

A great 90 minutes of immersive, engaging and interactive art. So memorable, striking installations (recommend wandering around at least twice to see what you missed) this is something different that will stay with you for a long time, from the entrance to the exit! Really like the hour slots so queues were no longer than 20 mins. Highly recommend.

If you want to spend hours queuing to experience the 'artworks' which are a complete flop, then this is the perfect exhibition for you. The work seemed to be masquerading as something much more intellectual than it actually was. The best bit about this exhibition was the entrance down the dark tunnel, but it was all downhill after that. Even... More

Staying in Southbank

Neighbourhood Profile
Big time attractions such as the London Eye and a thriving theatre scene (compliments of the National Theatre and the Young Vic) are but a few of the reasons that Southbank is such a collectively cherished part of town. With plenty of family friendly activities and venues lined up along a pedestrianized river bank between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge, visitors can always expect a casual and festive atmosphere. On top of all the fun stuff to do at Southbank is the opportunity to simply sit back and admire photo-op views of iconic landmarks like Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, just on across the Thames.
