An impressive memorial and statue well placed and catching the sun as you come out of the National Portrait Gallery. Immortalised amid the faltering military and naval confidence of the British whose propagandist denunciations of German behaviour camouflaged the probability that assisting enemy combatants in the UK also resulted in actual death sentences. Cavell had an impressive personal history and a great deal of international support was whipped up to oppose the execution. When that failed and she was shot the righteous indignation at home was huge.

This monument dedicated to the famous British nurse Edith Cavell. It is located near Trafalgar Square and the church of St Martin-in-the-fields. Her life was cut short when she was executed for treason by the Germans because she helped dozens of soldiers escape occupied Belgium during WWI. She is famous for saving lives of soldiers of both sides and her execution shocked the world.

Most important to have a memorial for this incredible lady who died for her beliefs and for helping others.
A real role-model and example of courage & dignity.

Edith was a first world war nurse who was executed by the Nazi regime in Brussels for aiding Triple Entente soldiers to escape from German held land. She was executed in 1915 and this is her London Memorial. She is buried at Norwich Cathedral.

Just a common monument. We met it by chance, while we were heading towards Trafalgar Square. I don't think it's worth going out of your way specifically to see it.

I love the cathedral soooo much, all it stands for and all that is around ie this memorial. The film was so touching and I watched it with my nanny as a child and always stayed in my heart.

This is an easy memorial to miss. Who is this woman, people think as they walk by? Google it sometime and see why this brave woman deserves this monument.

Edith Cavell (1865–1915) was a British nurse from Norfolk. She saved the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination during the First World War. She was shot by a German firing squad in Brussels on 12 October 1915. Cavell worked long times in Belgium and was notable as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.
The memorial is sited in St Martin's Place near Trafalgar Square. The site is adjacent to the first headquarters of the British Red Cross, originally located at 7 St Martin's Place.
This Modernist-style memorial comprises a 3-meter high statue of Cavell in her nurse's uniform sculpted from white Carrara marble. The statue stands in front of a larger 12-meter high grey granite pylon. The top of the block is carved into a cross and statue of a mother and child, interpreted as the Virgin and Child.

Located on the edge of Charing Cross Road the memorial to Edith Cavell monument is at the heart of the West End.
Leicester Square and Covent Garden are nearby as well as the St Martin In The Fields church, Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross station.
It is good there is a memorial to this lady and the good work she did.
