About
Situated in the Cavern Quarter at the heart of the city. Liverpool's most famous street not only houses the Cavern Club but numerous references and connections to the "four lads who shook the world" and Liverpool's long musical heritage. There's shopping, bars and pubs, and come summer weekends the street is packed with partying locals and tourists.

There are several good drinking spots including Flanagan’s Apple, The Grapes, Rubber Soul and Eric’s. During the day you can visit the Beatles Museum. The bars are great even though I’m not a big fan of live music in pubs. Cavern club is a must for any Beatles fan or any fan of music as it was the birthplace of the best music in the world. I highly recommend and I had a lovely time and met some great peopleVisited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 24 February 2024

Mathew Street should be a "must to see" by anyone who visits Liverpool but how it has changed since I was last here when I was a regular at the Cavern Club 55+ years ago. Mathew Street, originally named Mathew Pluckington Street, was, in the 1700s, when Liverpool was starting to become a major shipping port, an area of warehouses. In the late 1950s, however, Mathew Street became the hub of the Liverpool music scene and the home of the now world-famous Cavern Club where one certain group, The Beatles, began its rise to fame. As well as many statues, etc, of The Beatles there is also a very unusual bust; that of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. Despite never visiting Liverpool, Jung had a dream which he thought was about Liverpool. He believed this so much that he wrote "Liverpool is the pool of life, it makes to live" in his book "Memories, Dreams, Refelctions". A local businessman considered that Mathew Street was the place that Jung had dreamt about and he converted a warehouse into The Liverpool School of Language, Music, Dream and Pun. That building is now Flanagan's Apple pub with the bust of Carl Jung adorning its wall.

Needless to say if your a Beatles fan and are in Liverpool you need to head to Mathew Street. It’s in the heart of the city centre and home to the famous Cavern Club. Go and take a wander down the historic street where “it” all started.
But don’t confuse it with the Cavern Club with the Cavern Pub on the same street! Which in itself is interesting enough. All the bricks outside are inscribed with names of the famous musicians that have been there. Then there is a statue of John Lennon leaning against the wall, which can be easily missed.
Also in the street just outside the Cavern CLUB, (for which I have a separate review) is a statue of our lovely Cilla!

Cabin Club was great atmosphere. Arrived 9.30 pm on Thursday and at around 10.15 a Beatles tribute band came on and belted out the Beatles classics. They were not the best tribute band in the world but in the setting of the club and the material
they were performing none of that mattered. Lost my voice in the collective sing along and before I knew it was 1am and time to go! Well worth a visit!

Well worth a visit being only a five minute walk from Liverpool one shopping centre.
You can visit the Cavern where the Beatles and many other top bands played at and have a drink there with plenty of memorabilia to look at and listen to live music as well at certain times of the day and night although it is closed at the moment due to coronavirus.
Also along the street are statues of Various artists including Cilla Black.
Plenty of bars to have a drink at as well.
Well worth a visit especially if you were a Beatles fan.

Well what can I say….. Liverpool you have truly let yourself down… On all the visits I’ve done back to Liverpool to see family I’ve never taken my young daughters into Liverpool city centre in the evening. Last week I decided too. We went to see the lights and to Cosmo for food and I thought why not. I wanted to show them where nanny use to spend her weekends in her hey day. Wish I hadn’t bothered, walking down Mathew street I was disgusted to find full rubbish bins, tacky cheap bars rammed with people vomiting outside them (it was 7pm), we walked straight past the cavern, didn’t even recognise it. Absolutely shocking. Considering this is a massive tourist attraction you would have thought Liverpool council would have kept some semblance of decorum down there. It’s bloody awful and definitely not worth the visit…….

We'd visited here before on a lovely quiet Sunday afternoon. This time we visited at 5pm on a Saturday evening and it was bonkers. Lots of hen and stag nights making an early start, loud bars and a barrage of people it was like a trippy theme tribute to The Beatles.
Nowhere really to stop and eat and we managed to find the only window where The Cavern was closed.
Mad.

With so much great music associated with the street, particularly in the 1960s, it was evocative strolling by.
Statues and monuments capture the excitement of the area. One to Fab John and another to exuberant Cilla Black. Incidentally the tribute to Eleanor Rigby is also worth having a look at.
Clubs are numerous including the famous Cavern, but also other well-known venues.
The Beatles Museum is a must see for fans. A terrific display is the Wall of Fame that encapsulates so much musical talent in the city, with one segment showing the multitude of No 1 hits since 1952.

If I have one issue with Liverpool is that it is overwhelmed by all things Beatles.
There is so much to Liverpool than a band that existed for just 10 years.
However if you are into all things Beatles then this is the street to visit. There is a Beatles museum but it might come perilous close to being a tourist trap.

Hi, anyone visited on a Saturday afternoon? We are unlikely to be around much after 5pm but would like recommendations for the best place to spend a few hours, good atmosphere, live music, etc etc , We are post 50 year olds with wide taste in music, except karaoke! First time to Liverpool so welcome any advice , thanks in advance .

If you find Mathew Street too rowdy there is a cluster of older pubs opposite Central Station - we tend to go there on a Saturday afternoon.
Head of Steam on Hanover Street too. Also nice places to eat up Bold Street which is nearby.

Hi Daman
8 girls are coming to Liverpool a week on Sat the 26th May for a 40th, Have you any suggestions of place to go, please. We are going to be starting in Flares and are not wanting to be walking too far. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Soooo jealous just love Liverpool, you are central to all the bars and clubs so don't worry you will be spoilt for choice. Cavern club is a definite visit as there is music on all day, and there is a great friendly atmosphere, not somewhere you would spend a great deal of time, as it's very small inside, but a must see place. There's great cocktail bars all around, with deals on the door to entice you in, Sugar Palms is a good one. Have a great time.
