This gallery has always been a special place for myself and my family. If you only have an hour to spare, or a whole day, there is so much to see, something for everyone, there are so many examples of different genres of painting.

The gallery is very well laid out with the galleries following on in a chronological order. Paintings are well lit and the information alongside is comprehensive. There is a small coffee shop on the ground floor.

Nice to be able to visit an art gallery for a change and not have to fight through crowds although the customary noisy school visit was in evidence. Nice selection of paintings not quite up to the standard of the major national collections. Luckily I had bought and read a guidebook in advance as the interpretation in the gallery is... More

This place is amazing , I have never been here until now and I am really ashamed that I have never visited before > In a handy place close to the railway station , the building is impressive enough but the contents really astound you , to your left as you enter is a large room full of sculpures ,... Visited on a very cold, windy January afternoon. Plenty to see, although I really enjoyed the gallery downstairs which had many things that we use through the ages, and in particular some of the design changes over the years. Really amazing exhibition of vintage dresses from the collection of a cross dressing individual. We were very helpfully guided to take... More

We visited twice during our short stay. So much to see and enjoy. We appreciated having lockers to leave our heavy bags, and outer coats. Staff friendly and helpful. The guide and plan is helpful. Peacefuland quiet with plenty of seats to sit and just study the exhibits. Thank you.

I planned to spend an hour in the gallery but stayed for over three! It holds an amazing amount of art work.

Me and my wife were totally blown away with the exhibition. Loved the way each room was set out so as to guide the visitor through each century's offerings. Very surprised to spot a Turner among the paintings. Must be taken at a leisurely pace to savour. Taken pictures allowed. Great place to visit especially if the weather outside is... More

Housed in a great Neo-Classical building among among others, including the Picton Library, the World Museum & St George's Hall. The collection is strong on C19th paintings, particularly the Pre-Raphaelites.

We visited between Christmas & new year, this was our first stop with our children (6 & 9 yr old boys) having gotten off the train at Liverpool Lime Street (2 mins away) and on our way to the World Museum next door. Our kids had their cameras and wanted to take pictures, the staff were very good at explaining... More
