    Powerful and Sobering
We arrived in Liverpool sort of by accident due to a map issue and decided to make the most of it by visiting some of the sites. We were a little short on time but we decided to go straight to the floor which housed the International Slavery Museum which I actually do think is the most important part of the museum. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the rest of the museum (but we will visit again in the future) but the Slavery floor was well worth it. I found myself in tears reading the stories and the exhibits and exceptionally uncomfortable at much of the content, including the KKK garb. The experience was powerful and sobering. Very much looking forward to visiting again.

Fabulous Walking Tour of the Old Docks
The museum is great but we really enjoyed the walking tour of the old docks!! What an amazing history of Liverpool. Too see where the original old docks were located vs where the docks are today was so interesting. It was also amazing to us how closely tied Liverpool was to the USA confederate states....so interesting. It gives a lot of color to what life must have been like in Liverpool in those days.

Fantastic free museum. Great for families.
Excellent museum. Yes, there's a lot about the Titanic and similar incidents but the museum provides exhibits and information that tell the story from different perspectives that usual. There's also a history of the docklands area and, if you time it right they do tours of the Old Dockyard. I loved the interactive talks. Although aimed at families with children, I still enjoyed them as an adult. All the staff I spoke ti were great, but special credit to the two lovely ladies who did the "talks" I saw on Saturday 30th September. Your enthusiasm was infectious. Would highly reccomend this museum.

    Interesting
Great way to spend a couple of hours. Slavery exhibition was interesting although felt a bit disjointed when trying to follow a logical way around the exhibits. Titanic exhibition was great. Staff very friendly and cafe was perfect place to refuel half way round.

    Worth a visit
Very well put together with a great mixture of visual and written information. It gives an overview of English/British maritime history as well as the development of the docks in Liverpool. Staff friendly and helpful. Gift shop could be better. Not a great range of items, especially if you are interested in the subject matter.

in need of focus and flow
I was initially excited about visiting this museum, but it seemed to suffer from a lack of thoughtful curation. There were too many objects and artifacts and too much text. I did enjoy the Lusitania exhibit, mainly because it was a smaller topic than others The vitally important International Slavery Museum would benefit from more focus and flow. Personally, I would be interested to learn much more about Liverpool's role in the slave trade, and, indeed the maritime industry's role in supporting the south in the U.S. Civil War. The cafe was pleasant as was sitting at the tables outside on a nice day.

    Great museum
Fantastic museum spread over several floors. Loads of interactive exhibits to keep our youngest interested whilst we had chance to read the information boards. Loads of toilet facilities on each floor which were spotless. Definitely worth visiting and it’s free.

A Fantastic Setting and historic celebration of the Port of Liverpool.
The museum occupies warehouse block D at the impressive and historic Albert Dock. The highlight has to be the focus on the Titanic which sank on 15 April 1912 and the British ship Lusitania which sank after being attacked by a German U-boat during World War I on 7 May 1915. A detailed description of the ships are provided. White Star Line which owned the Titanic was in Liverpool, so Titanic carried "Liverpool" on her stern. There are some impressive items to see including actual artifacts taken from the wreck. You can also discover the extraordinary stories of emigration to a new world and how many thousands travelled from the port of Liverpool. A must is also a visit to the sombre International Slavery Museum which is based on its third floor.

The museum is a great way of learning how Liverpool emerged and the pepole that made the City was it is today.. The first floor I noticed was all about Customs, How Customs work and what it was like back many years ago..On the second floor it was About The Titanic,The crew, Passengers , I liked that a lot because of the memorabilia and some great pictures of the ship and crew. The third floor was about The Slave Trade that came to Liverpool, Very touching, With some pepole telling what it was like. It is free , But a donation is much appreciated, Situated in The Docks. The staff were Very friendly..

    So MUCH to see
Wow! Just go, and explore this incredible FREE museum - just go! We loved the history, the important links to Liverpool and the world...the stories and primary sources of information are first-rate. I was very moved by the exhibition on the sinking of the Lusitania...told with gentleness - yet the horrific losses and their impacts still horrendous to cause a wave of horror in 2023.

We wanted to go to this museum whilst visiting Liverpool for the first time. We were welcomed in by staff wearing masked, we had our masks on as it requested visitors to wear them. Had all our details taken, by the staff member. Started to visit the 2nd floor, our visit was then totally spoilt and utterly ruined by selfish arrogant people not wearing masks, hugely dissatisfied, this is why this plague will return, not impressed, should be closed down if this is normal

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your visit to Merseyside Maritime Museum. I am sorry to hear that your visit gave you reason for concern. In line with government guidance, visitors to our venues are required to wear a face covering during their visit, the exception being those visitors who are exempt from wearing a face covering. While our Visitor Experience staff do encourage visitors to our venues to wear a face covering, it is not their responsibility to enforce this requirement; it is the responsibility of the police. At our venues, we have installed signage to communicate the mandatory face covering message to our visitors and we also have updated visitor information on our social media.

An excellent museum, especially for anyone who has, or has had, relatives that are/were sailors. The items were well displayed, the exhibits so interesting and the museum so large that we underestimated the time that we would need to get round and we had to return the following day. The presentation on the second day that we went was about the role of the Wrens during the second world war. Delivered by an actor in uniform playing one of those Wrens it was well worth seeing.

Great visit to the museum, especially as they currently have an exhibit focusing on the Titanic - what happened, who was on board, and the inquisition after.

There is also a section on the sinking of the Lithuania by a German U-boat, as well as the merchant navy during WWII.

There are excellent and detailed models and dioramas of ships, large and small.

Entry is free, but you encouraged to donate 5 pounds or more.

A really interesting museum that's absolutely full of exhibits.

The only negative thing was the guy who collared us to answer a 'short' survey about the museum. It wasn't short at all and the questions included things like how much we were spending on various things, my job title etc. It seemed intrusive and unnecessary and kind of killed the good mood we were in before we left.

At the moment the Titanic display is closed for refurbishment. This is a bit of a disappointment but may give us a reason to visit again.
For those who have an interest in history there are some fantastic stories being shared here. In particular we were interested by the presentation given on the Battle of the Atlantic. However, our pre-teen children found them quite difficult to access and it took a lot on my part to maintain their interest.
This is a great place to visit if you have time to read the information boards and to take in the stories. It might be worth visiting without the kids and then come back again with them so you can help them to be enthusiastic. This would probably be a different story once the Titanic section opens again.

We spent approximately 2 hours at the Maritime Museum. On entry, which was free we were greeted by friendly and helpful staff (there is a recommended donation of ÂŁ5, but no pressure to donate). Great displays and loads of interesting maritime facts and stories. A must see in Liverpool.

For me the section dedicated to the history of the slave trade was informative, upsetting and really gave perspective.
Very nicely curated museum, interesting from top to bottom. Free to get in but ÂŁ5 donation is a small price to pay for such touching history and detail

Finally had the chance to visit the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Dock redevelopment.
Interesting, free to visit museum with displays on Cruise ships including Titanic and the Star Line, Marine Shipping and the most interesting display area on smuggling and border security.
A very good museum - though dark and claustrophobic inside at times - a constraint of the historic dock building, but needs better lighting in places.
Still, a nice afternoon in a museum.

This waterfront museum has an incredible amount of artefacts and displays on most aspects of maritime history, especially relating to the port of Liverpool.

The top floor displays concerning slavery and Liverpool’s important role in the history of this awful trade are extensive and illuminating but I did find that some key aspects I would like to know about were absent, for instance there was very little information on how the trade worked in practice within the African continent.

There were excellent sections dedicated to the Titanic and Lusitania that were detailed and interesting, my only difficulty was that throughout the museum I found it hard to work out which way to proceed?
Maybe modern museums want you to figure this out for yourself but I like to be provided with directional arrows that set you on a timeline rather than being left to set off into the middle or end of the story… I want to find about the creation of the Titanic before reading about the aftermath of the sinking.
Just about everything in the story is covered but I spent around ten minutes in each section figuring out which bits to view first.

There is no floor guide map available to carry with you, however the signage throughout the museum is excellent.

We had coffee in the museum cafe which was fine if a little on the pricey side.

There is no entry fee but donations are encouraged, all in all this is a great museum and a credit to Liverpool but I found the layouts somewhat confusing to navigate.

Liverpool has a great maritime history, so they should be plenty of material for this museum. However, it is mostly a service of model ships, with very little authentic material. Worth a visit, but keep your expectations very modest.
