St Jame's Gardens is the park and cemetery area behind and below Liverpool Cathedral originally a stone quarry and up until 1936 a city cemetery it has now been designated a Grade I listed park .
The actual quarry/cemetery/garden area predates the Liverpool Cathedral, the construction of the cathedral began in 1903,it was known as St James Mount,Quarry Hill and even Mount Zion ,in 1771 it was established as Liverpool's first public park .
Walking through the gardens is cool ,lots to take in and enjoy including the ancient gravestones, Huskisson Memorial, the spring and of course the stunning views of Liverpool Cathedral from below, its a calm and tranquil garden area, we walked through here from the cathedral to The Oratory .
It's a beautiful and peaceful garden area and most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area or planning a visit to Liverpool Cathedral.

An oasis of calm in our busy and bustling city is St James Gardens located adjacent to Liverpool Cathedral.
The park pre dates the cathedral ,in fact Liverpool Cathedral was only constructed in 1903 were as the park which was Liverpool's first established public park was opened in 1771 and was known as St James Mount, Quarry Hill or even Mount Zion.
The fact the park / cemetery is below the street level is an obvious sign that it was originally a quarry, from 1829 it was designated a cemetery with 57.839 recorded burials, it remained a cemetery until 1936 and is now a Grade I listed public park .
There's so much to see and so much to enjoy, from The Oratory and Maurice Gandy Memorial at the entrance to the gardens to the ancient tomb stones that proliferate the gardens ,its a cool place to explore.
There are some really interesting features to be found in the gardens ,of particular interest is the Charlybeate Spring and Huskusson Memorial, add to this the stunning views of the magnificent Liverpool Cathedral makes St James Gardens a great place to visit.
Easy to locate adjacent to Liverpool Cathedral and most definitely well worth checking out.

When visiting Liverpool Cathedral this is well worth a 20 minute add on to your trip. Located in the old quarry directly adjacent and below the cathedral, the gardens are less a cemetery and more a memorial garden (most of the impressive gravestones are tributes to people who have died all over the world (from Hong Kong to New York and from Севастополь to South Africa) who touched the lives of the Liverpool people. It's a somewhat eerie place but pleasant at the same time. It also commands a great view of the cathedral from below. It also boasts the only surviving natural spring in Liverpool (Rome this isn't) It's now just a trickle enhanced by a leaf so that it pours out...and the water is cold and salty but it's the last remaining natural spring in the city, so worth a visit just to say you've been there.
We enjoyed our 20-30 minutes down here chilling and looking at the interesting gravestones. Do visit.

I always take a walk around these gardens whenever I visit Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral as they are so beautiful. You enter the gardens via a path to the left of the cathedral and pass through a short tunnel cut through the rock. The tunnel is lined with gravestones and one of the first I saw was that of a sea captain who died on my birhthday in the 1800s which I found rather spooky. The gardens are lovely at any time of the year but especially during Autumn as there are so many trees lining the paths. As the gardens are right alongside the cathedral you get great views of this magnificent building towering over you as you walk around. There are many gravestones throughout the gardens which make very interesting reading as they provide a history of the city. The most poignant are those with the names of the children who died in the Childrens’ Orphan Asylums, some obviously very young. Although the gardens were once officially called St James’ Cemetery this is not a sad or mournful place but somewhere to stroll and feel very calm even though you are only a short walk from the city itself.

Pleasant stroll amongst the old graves. Delightful sun trap during the day with areas to sit and have lunch. You have to be prepared to share with the multitude of dogs.

We stumbled upon St James Gardens when we were walking around the Cathedral trying to find the entrance. I would have liked to explore the gardens, but we came upon some teenagers who had gotten out of school and were up to no good, so we went directly into the church instead.

Stopped the car to get the view of the gardens From Gambier Terrace, wow. It must be fab to open your curtains to see the spectacular Anglican Cathedral surrounded by these lovely gardens. The sun was bright but the day was cold but it was very worthwhile to just stand appreciate one of the city’s great landmarks.

We spotted the gateway leading to St James gardens when visiting the cathedral, deciding to investigate further upon leaving. Not knowing what to expect, we walked downhill, under an arch and looked at a few of the old gravestones.

Turning a corner, the gardens opened out. We very much enjoyed walking around below street level & up onto some of the banks. A peaceful spot. Nice breather away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre just a short distance away.

The gardens, a former quarry and then a cemetery before they became what they are today, are Grade 1 listed by English Heritage and contains a few items of interest including a natural spring. If you are visiting the cathedral, stop for a while in the tranquil gardens next door.

These are the gardens in the center of town next to the art museum and near the train station. Kind of wild and not perfectly landscaped. Nice green space in the middle of a lot of traffic.
