Description:

Immerse yourself in Lake District History at the Museum of Lakeland Life...

Immerse yourself in Lake District History at the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry. Inside you can explore a typical Victorian farmers home from the food in the kitchen, to the elegance of the parlour. Other galleries tell the story of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the industrial history of this beautiful part of the world. Here you can discover the Lake District’s past in farming, mining, tanning, and many other ways that people have made a living amongst the fells.

The Museum allows you to discover how people have lived in the Lake District and how the unique landscape has shaped their lives. You can also find out about Arthur Ransome, one of the Lake District’s most famous authors, and colourful characters. And why not stroll down the Victorian high street before you go to find out about the toys, food, and even medicines of the past.

The Museum of Lakeland life is a must see for anyone interested in the history of this beautiful area, and with changing exhibitions looking at all aspects of Lakeland Life there will always be something new to discover.

Decided to visit on a day a bit wet and cold for walking. Spent 2.5 hours here. So much to see and read about the history of life and industry in the Lake District. (Some people seemed to rush around in ten minutes, but that seems to be the case in many museums). Friendly and helpful staff. As always some... More

Although compact this museum gives an overview of Lakeland life. It has static displays of all aspects of daily life both in the home and the many occupations of Kendal as well as some of those with connections to Kendal such as Arthur Ransomed. Worth a visit.

The Museum of Lakeland Life makes for a very pleasant and interesting visit. The street feature with old shops is, to be honest, not as good as many others I have seen elsewhere, but this is made up for by the very interesting domestic interiors, and when you take the total exhibit into consideration there is plenty to see. We... More

Highly recommended for those with curious kids, also anyone interested in domestic history. It ranges from milk bottles, to tenterhooks, red flannel petticoats and a good exhibition about Arthur Ransome, a surprising man.

Went here one afternoon, the museum was due to close in 30 minutes time, not enough after I saw what was there! Allow at least an hour. You start downstairs, recreations of old shops and the sounds of the time and then you go upstairs, so much to see, all old things from the area. I was lucky to have... More

We spent a couple of hours in this delightful museum as we were looking for something to do away from the persistent rain! It is informative and well laid out and has some interesting machinery and furniture. There is room dedicated to Arthur Ransome which provides an interesting overview of his life.

I visited on a joint ticket with the Abbot Hall Art Gallery valid for a year. The exhibitions took my mind off the cares of the world and the rooms are a little different. Great if you love Swallows and Amazons. Paying car park at the entrance which might be £2.30
