Nestled next to the lovely church, the grammar school is an amazing trip back in time! It was the school attended by William Wordsworth and his name can clearly be seen carved into his desk! The gentleman in charge was very knowledgeable about it and...More

We were overwhelmed by the history at this place and the tour guide was full of information, you could feel the 1500s seeping through the walls. A real feel how boys were educated in those days. Very enjoyable

Hawkshead is a little off the beaten track itself, demanding a commitment in driving time of perhaps 15-20 minutes from Ambleside with twisty roads, and the Grammar School within Hawkshead can also easily be missed, for parking in the main car park and walking into...More

Small grammar school where Wordsworth went. You can even see his graffiti on the desk! Cheap to get into as well

We had a pleasant half hour in here with a lovely gentleman explaining things to us. We found it interesting and informative and could relate our 50's schooling with some of what we saw. Reduced rate of entry for us oldies.

Whilst the Wordsworthian connection doubtless brings many people scurrying to this ancient building, it is important and enjoyable enough to stand up in its own right for what it is: a rare relic of local, philanthropic education before government assumed this responsibility for its citizens....More
