William Wordsworth is Britain's best-loved poet. His life was a series of adventures and his early experiences made him into a rebel. Orphaned as a child, he went to University, travelled across Europe during the French Revolution, fell in love with an older French woman and then returned to turn English literature on its head with his radical ideas and poems in language that anyone could understand. He moved to Dove Cottage in 1799 and stayed for nine years, writing some of the most famous poetry in the English language, inspired by the landscape and the people he met. Visitors can take guided tours of Dove Cottage, wander in the gardens he designed and planted with his sister and discover his incredible life story in the museum next door (included in admission). Special exhibitions change regularly and family activities are integrated into the experience, with family friendly events during the school holidays.

The entry into Dove Cottage is timed which is perfect as it is quite a small place. We were met by a guide who took our group around and explained the history of the cottage and how the Wordsworth family had come to live there. She was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. There are quite a few personal... More

The cottage where Wordsworth lived and where he wrote a lot of his famous poems...'Daffodils' for one. Gives a real taste of what life was like in the 19th century. Lots of other things to do after the timed house tour. Museum, tea room and shop. Large car park as well. Not really suitable for younger children and access to... More

It was interesting to see the home of William Wordsworth and hear how he and his family lived. More interesting was the attached museum with letters and biographical details.

We enjoyed the very informative 25 minute guided tour of the small Dove Cottage. Here lived the poet for eight years and wrote much of his best work during that time. Recommended.

You'll only enjoy visiting Dove Cottage if you have an interest in English literature and poets. You'll learn about how he lived with his sister, and later on his wife and children.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum. The guide in, Hazel, Dove Cottage was excellent. She not only knew the life and history of Wordsworth and his family thoroughly but had great insight into his poetry. We went away with a renewed interest in Wordsworth and his poetry.

The tour of this cottage, where Wordsworth lived with his sister, wife, and children, was informative and lengthy. The cottage itself is a bit claustrophobic, but our guide was well informed and made the tour worthwhile. I am not sure I would do it twice, however.

A fascinating visit to the home of one of our greatest poets. When Dove Cottage is seen from the outside it is little more than quaintly suburban. Inside it's basically furnished but so atmospheric. To hear the ticking clocks and the cuckoo evokes a bygone era. A real gem.

The building is impeccably maintained and presented and the guide gave us a very interesting, well paced tour. Even if you don't know much about Wordsworth, there's such a sense of history about the place that it's hard not to find it a little moving. very pretty garden and super friendly gift shop staff. Worth the price of the admission... More
