Novice fell walker, managed tolerably. All of thirds, first third gentle upwards slope good path, second third industrial steeper slatey underfoot, arrive low tarn, final third steep uphill jagged more challenging (for a novice). Shame about the visability at the top but conquered none the less. Parked Walna scar road. Took about 2.5 hrs up

Led a group of friends to the top of the Old Man and then did a short loop North. Good weather at the top, while I was there, although it turned as we descended. It is a straightforward climb, with a couple of steep ascents and descents. Well worth a climb if visiting Coniston. It was on my list of... More

Took this walk on with a family of 8 of various ages. It's not easy but not hard and we were up and back in 3.5 hours. Lots of ways of geeting to the top, but thoroughly enjoyed by all

We were just about to part with an excessive £7.50 in a car park with the information board to the Old Man when another man told us there is a car park further up. We drove up a very narrow single track Tarmac road with the odd passing space, very steep. Tailing me were two other cars. We got to... More

The car park is hard to find but worth finding as it saves a lot of walking! We walked. The views are amazing. We visited as 2 families and the kids loved it. There are streams to dip the toes, tunnels to explore and breath taking views. We had a fabulous day and we will return.

Walked up the old man from Torver round trip 8 miles great views as weather perfect gradual ascent, better walk Torver side than Coniston side. Busy at the summit however quiet on route.

– it took 5hrs there and back from our B&B in Coniston. Our fault, we didn’t really research it properly and just thought ‘sod it’ we’ll go up. Make sure you take proper previsions, we didn’t! As it’s an old slate mine, what you’re walking on is loose slate, so make sure you have you wits about you, I nearly... More
