Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As we were coming from Boot we had already driven over Hardknott Pass, which is much more challenging, so Wrynose seemed like a doddle in comparison.

That’s not to smuggest that it isn’t an exhilarating drive, because it really is a joy. Because it is relatively easier you have more opportunity to look at the wonderful scenery and as you come over the summit and view the land spreading out in front of you, you feel as though you are on the top of the world - and fortunately there are a couple of places to park up to take in the views.

A lovely drive - but you do need to take care.

The people who drive these roads seem to be driven by need to make other road users' drive hellish. Use otherroadse even though it might be long.

Wrynose Pass is a beautiful road to drive, in the right weather.
Leading onto Hardknott and the Roman remains.
Those who expect Rhinos on Wrynose will be sorely disappointed but a few Herdwick sheep and the occasional rabbit are much easier to find.
The Maneksha Boy should take note.

Drove through here almost accidentally but so glad we did. Amazing scenery and winding roads through the hills. Absolutely beautiful even on a rainy day.

One of my favourite drives in the country.
An exhilarating 30 minutes through the most amazing scenery with plenty of places to allow others to pass or to stop and take in the views. Probably not for nervous drivers (or passengers), but would recommend for those of a more adventurous disposition!

Not quite as hair raising as the Hardknott Pass, but still a thrilling drive with great views.

The approach roads are very narrow, so not recommended for larger or wider vehicles, or indeed the faint harted…. Also, given the steep winding roads on the pass, make sure that your tyres and brakes are in good condition.

The views at the top make the drive worthwhile

It is many years since I had driven across this pass, and decided with some trepidation to attempt it again. The road was scheduled to close for a major cycling event, but the marshalls advised that we had time to pass through prior to the closure. This is a very challenging drive with narrow very steep inclines and very sharp hairpin bends. The views are very impressive, but drivers unfortunately have little time to see the best, having to concentrate on the conditions. The surface is rough in places and there are a small number of locations where stopping is possible. Whilst this pass continues into the even more challenging Hardknott Pass, there is one signed opportunity to abort before continuing. Only attempt these routes to see the views providing you are confident of your vehicle and driving skills.

I’d be warned against driving the passes and on route to Wast Water I took the long way round.

But for the return journey to Ambleside I figured why not …how bad could it be?

I think I held my breath for huge sections, had everything crossed that my car would make it and that I wouldn’t hit a sheep or skid off the side.

It’s the only time I’ve ever wished I had dash cam - as I don’t think anyone will believe me when I say just how crazy those roads are.

But, me and the VW beetle survived and I feel a huge sense of achievement having driven both Hardknott and Wrynose.

I’d probably do it again to be honest but with someone else driving so I could take photos!

Part of my enjoyment when visiting the Lake District is to drive these wonderful passes. The views and the challenge of the road is such a great experience.
