THE FERENS ART GALLERY IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR MAJOR REFURBISHMENT AND WILL REOPEN EARLY 2017.

Opened in 1927, the award winning Ferens Art Gallery combines internationally renowned permanent collections with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions. We also run a lively education and events programme that includes tours, talks and art workshops.

The gallery's first-class permanent collection of paintings and sculpture spans the medieval period to the present day. These include European Old Masters, particularly Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine paintings, modern and contemporary British art, including video. Highlights include masterpieces by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Helen Chadwick and Gillian Wearing.

Brilliant art gallery

Really enjoyed our visit here - there's a lot to see. There's a lot of older art but even most of the 'modern art' was pretty good. Good range of styles and abilities.

Excellent regional art gallery but with many old masters. Works included by Bacon, Barbara Hepworth and a wonderful Hals "portrait of a young girl" as well as the best of local talent. Free entry.

Went to see the Bacon Screaming Popes there as part of the City of culture events plus their new Lorenzetti acquisition. However the gallery is worth a visit in it's own right with a range of eras represented and some very informative information next to each painting - this was far better than most galleries I've visited & I picked... Today was my first visit since the reopening we went in for lunch and the food was as good as it as always been, the staff were run off their feet yet they still managed to stay cheery and polite nothing too much for them .the sweet potato chips are to die for and the Chicken Mayo sandwich was delicious as... A lovely gallery with some very nice art. With 12 gallery spaces there's lots to look at, I really enjoyed looking at the temporary exhibitions. The one thing I thought odd, having been closed for 15 months for a £5million refurbishment, was the lack of disabled access, heavy glass doors into all the galleries bar 1 of the upstairs galleries... My husband and I visited Hull to see the blade in Queen Victoria Square and to visit the art gallery. When we walked in it could have been good if someone had given us some literature and told us the best way to go round the gallery. apart from that we enjoyed looking at the paintings and sculptures. It is... More

Another great place to visit...and another free entry. From memory there are twelve exhibitions to review. The one I found most interesting is the one where you can buy pieces of art ranging from a few pounds to £24,000. Fortunately I'd left my chequebook at home! Plenty to see. There is a small cafe and a children's craft area. Think... More

We came to the Feren's on Wednesday to see the Blade, the kneeling sculpture, Frances Bacon and the open exhibition. We were very impressed with the refurb the galleries are very modern and neat. There was a lot of 'no photography' signs; too many for my liking really. The Toddler/children room was amazing, had lots to play with and do,... More

The Ferens has a wide variety of art, laid out in rooms relating to different periods (which helps a philistine such as I). There are some stunning works by Francis Bacon at the moment, and the museum has a beautiful piece by Lorenzetti. When we visited, there was an open exhibition with some really inventive work by local artists, which also...
