The gate stands as a dramatic entrance to the Cathedral precinct from the Buttermarket and would have made for a commanding presence when built in the early sixteenth century. Over the years there have been many changes including early in the nineteenth century when an...More

This is the main entrance to the Cathedral Precinct - it is a beautiful piece of architecture, but as with many monuments in Canterbury, not much is made of it and being surrounded by retail spaces kind of detracts from its importance. It really is...More

Built in the early 1500s to honour the marriage of Prince Arthur to Catherine of Aragon, Christ Church Gate leading from the Buttermarket to the Cathedral is very impressive. Completely covered in stunning stone carving, with towers rebuilt in 1937 and a large bronze statue...More

The main entrance to the Cathedral Precincts is through Christ Church Gate (1517). It's a stunning piece of building and architecture, but not much else. Worth taking a photo, but it's on a shopping high street.

The Christ Church Gate is the entrace way to Canterbury Cathedral. A very impressive work of art with ornate statues and carvings. Lots of students congregate next to the gate at the Canterbury War Memorial in Buttermarket Square

Great area, rich with history and architecture. We loved it. Some amazing shops in there as well. I couldn't stop staring at the gates, what an entrance!

A very grand entrance into the cathedral. The statute on the outside guards the way in. This gatehouse holds the ticket booth, so you'll see it on your way into the cathedral. But free to view for all.
