About
Located in the heart of the historic city of Winchester, City Museum tells the story of England’s ancient capital, the seat of Alfred the Great. From its origins as an Iron Age trading centre to Anglo‑Saxon glory, the last journey of Jane Austen to the hunt for King Alfred’s remains, explore the sights and sounds of Winchester past and present in the museum’s three galleries.

Situated just of the main shopping street and close to the cathedral. A three floor museum with lots of exhibits and information.

Set on three floors, the museum is extremely interesting and gives great insight into the history of Winchester over the last 2000 years.

Was impressed by the video talk over the town model on the ground floor, great display piece and very informative.

Start at the top for the Roman exhibits and then work your way down. The museum is only little but worth a trip. The model of Winchester on the ground floor is fabulous and bob on.

Very reasonably priced at £5 each or you can add the Westgate museum for an extra £1. Plenty to see over 3 floors, though not much at the Westgate museum, worth it for an extra quid.

Winchester City Museum is a great place to learn about the City and as it's right next door to the Cathedral it's worth visiting both, there are lots of of artefacts to see and read about and a wonderful model of the city dating from 1870 onwards. The history starts from the city's origins as an iron age trading post through to today.

We had so much fun at the museum today. Well set out information, interesting artefacts and very helpful staff. There was so many interactive features for the children to experience. Dressing as an archaeologist and matching bones and mosaics. Drawers full of fun puzzles. Shield making at the end of our visit was so creative. Really friendly staff and great gift shop.

This was an extra visit that we tacked onto our main event (the cathedral). It was quite interesting with exhibits about Winchester’s history and development. It worked for us as a supplemental.

Interesting museum on 3 floors, lots of history and helpful staff. COVID precautions good. We got a joint ticket for £8 each which also covers the Westgate museum.

For the size and importance of the City we expected rather more, and some of the exhibits were limited by Covid secure measures: however, it was open, unlike the City Mill, so credit for that. Covid signage is over the top, and the main attraction suffered for the lack of audio information headphones: the custodian was helpful in explanations, however.
