- ShaunH290London, United Kingdom3,019 contributionsExcellent Local History Museum! We were pleasantly surprised with this museum. They have certainly given the second largest Roman city a very good presentation - well worth the money for the Roman remains alone - especially the mosaics! The prehistoric period (usually a bit boring) is also well done. A modern museum with lots of exhibits presented very well. Great for children looking for Romans in particular!Hi Shaun, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review. We're delighted you enjoyed your visit and hope you will be back again soon.Written 15 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- Mike WWeymouth, United Kingdom316 contributionsFantastic CollectionFascinating museum. The exhibits are laid out in chronological order from the Stone Age through to the modern age. The Roman Period has the most exhibits but this is only to be expected seeing the Cirencester (Corinium) was the capital of Britannia during one period of the Raman occupation and was there was also a legionary fortress there.Hi Mike, thank you so much for visiting and sharing this fantastic review.Written 15 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- Bertie1224Northamptonshire, United Kingdom1,448 contributionsExcellent informative experienceA must for any visit to Cirencester. So many historic pieces. The mosaics are just amazing. Imagine seeing that in situ in all its glory. The reconstruction of the Roman ‘lounge’ is so fascinating. It could be today. Padded two seater, chair, ‘coffee’ table and ornately painted walls. You just expect a Roman to pop in! There is so much to see and do and activities for children. The array of artefacts is amazing. You cannot help but think who made it, who lost it, when was it last held before being retrieved? The story is really relayed as you walk around. It’s not just Roman history. The Saxon burial exhibit is very surreal. You could imagine standing there on the actual day. You then walk through time including the Civil War all illustrated, including more artefacts and text explanation. There is so much to see I would thoroughly recommend a visit.Hi Bertie, thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to write this wonderful review. It's lovely to hear that you enjoyed exploring the galleries. If you are interested in finding out more about our collection we have regular evening lectures and walking tours of the town. - A Midlife AdventureDursley, United Kingdom2,851 contributionsReally fantastic local museumI am in my midlife and despite not living that far from Cirencester I have never visited this museum. I wanted to learn more about the Roman settlement here and a friend directed me to try the museum.. The joy of this museum is that it is presented in chronological order and takes you right back to the beginning of prehistoric times and brings you all the way through the ages up to modern Britain. I love a well curated museum that's easy to follow and doesn't jump around from one era to another. The addition of an audioguide assisted our visit and I was really surprised by the quantity of exhibits and how much history sits within a few miles of this Roman town. The extent of the historic exhibits was worth the entrance fee and the couple of hours we spent there. I left with such a greater appreciation of the history that surrounds me.Hello, thank you for taking the time to write this fantastic review. We are delighted you enjoyed your visit and it's great to hear that you also used our audio guide. - em123482 contributionsFab local museum, easily accessible by disabled peoplI visited with my husband earlier this week on Monday at about 1130am. I asked at the reception if there was a discount for disabled, and was told that a carer can accompany a disabled person for free. I offered to provide proof of my disability which I had copied on my phone but that was not needed. I paid £7.40 for myself and my carer. It's a lovely museum on two levels showing beautiful mosaics, jewellery, earthenware and shields etc of the last 2000 years in the area. There was a lift so the second floor could be accessed and a WC.Hello, thank you for taking the time to write this fantastic review. - Dreamer418464733992 contributionsHighly recommend you visit. We were so impressed with the whole vistor experience, the museum is beautifully maintained and the lay out excellent, the artefacts were superb so much more than we expected especially the mosaics. We were there much longer than expected and took a break half way round to have lunch in the very nice cafe. We also recommend the 10 minute walk to the amphitheatre which is very well laid out with information boards.Hello, we are delighted you enjoyed your visit and hope you will be back to see us again soon.Written 3 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 April 2024
- RimikaLincolnshire, United Kingdom248 contributionsMuseum Well Worth a Visit for all agesWe wanted to do something before our sons wing walk that afternoon and decided to go to the museum. Been to various museums all over the world, due to travelling the world and living in NZ and Australia, this is one best my husband and I have been to. Staff are really friendly and helpful, the mosaics are stunning (view from first floor for a different angle), found out lots of things about the Romans that we had not come across before. You can use the ticket to re-enter the same day, if you want a lunch break. Car Parking in the area is expensive, starting at £1 for 1/2 hour.Hi Kaz, thank you for writing this brilliant review. I hope the wing walk went as well as your visit.Written 3 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- 102WallaceAyrshire, United Kingdom109 contributionsA must-see museum in the centre of CirencesterThis is a must-visit if you're in Cirencester or the Cotswolds. It's a small museum but beautifully laid out. The highlight is the stunning Roman mosaics but there are also thousands of artefacts on display. The focus on Roman Cirencester is good but the museum also tells the story of the area outside that period. Do ask the museum volunteers about the exhibits - they are very knowledgeable and very willing to share that knowledge with visitors.Hi Wallace, thank you for taking the time to write this fantastic review. - MemoChicago, Illinois202 contributionsRoman City comes back to lifeIt took two visits, the first with a local resident, to fully appreciate the depth and extent of the museum’s collection. The mosaic floors of two Roman villas are the highlight of the collection. Amazing condition with the detail explained in depth. It is child friendly with several interactive exhibits. For us adults the second floor has, among other exhibits, 5 Roman headstones in good condition but what’s makes headstones fascinating is the voice over of the deceased talking about their Roman life. This former Roman city of Corinium ruled the western part of GB and was larger in populace than the current town of Cirencester. There is indication it was also a military base.Thank you for sharing your thoughtful review with us! We’re delighted to hear about your positive experiences during both of your visits to the museum. We are thrilled that you appreciated the depth and extent of our collection. The mosaic floors of the Roman villas are indeed some of our most prized exhibits, and it's wonderful to know that you found their condition and detailed explanations impressive. Thank you once again for your kind words and for taking the time to fully explore our museum. We hope to welcome you back for more discoveries in the future!Written 31 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 June 2024
- Julia HChorley, United Kingdom100 contributionsHidden gemWe finally managed a visit today and we weren’t disappointed. Friendly and welcoming reception staff. A lovely well laid out museum stuffed with amazing artefacts and impressive mosaics. The interactive parts for kids were great. My son (8) liked the mosaic making part and jigsaw plus the round house. He even tried the dress up clothes in which he wouldn’t usually. The toilets were clean and the access to the lovely cafe was perfect. Definitely worth a visit.Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you and your family had such a great visit. It's fantastic to know that our reception staff made you feel welcome and that you enjoyed exploring the museum. We take pride in our exhibits, and it's always rewarding to hear that our visitors appreciate the artefacts and mosaics as much as we do. We're especially pleased that your son had a fun and engaging experience with our interactive activities. Thank you again for your kind words and for recommending our museum. Nice collection of mosaics and Roman artifacts for a very reasonable entry charge. Parking can be difficult as the town centre car parks are very busy. Building work underway at front of museum but main displays are all open as normal so don’t be put off. There are also some interesting Saxon finds and the current work when complete will cover the pre-roman period.

Timed entry has to be booked on-line, but the advantage is that you can take your time. The exhibits are very well laid out, and the one-way system takes you on a fascinating walk through the town's history. The emphasis is very much on the Roman period (since Cirencester was second only to London in importance). Some wonderful mosaics. Children would find it interesting too

Wasn’t sure that the museum would have reopened for our visit but a chance phone call meant that we booked over the phone and visited a short while later. In my experience some museums can be a bit stuffy but this one is informative and fascinating. They have coped well with the whole Covid restrictions. An absolute must for any visitor to Cirencester. Also loved the gift shop.

This is an excellent museum. It provides an imaginative glimpse of life in Roman Cirencester, a sophisticated and important town, second in size only to London. With 18,000 inhabitants, it was almost as populous as it is today (20,000 residents)
There are some beautiful mosaic floors relocated to the museum, hundreds of artefacts, including earthenware pots and utensils, jewellery, tools, coin hoards, and much more. Everything is set into context and brought to life with videos and interactive information, clearly displayed. Cirencester has a fascinating history and is still a beautiful town, well-worth visiting. The museum paints a vivid portrait of of its background

This is a small but wonderful museum, with some amazing Roman artifacts dating back 2000 years including wonderful street/ house mosaics , columns, wall plaster, jewellery, tools etc. There is a lot of written information throughout although this is only in English.
We spent about 75 minutes there, at present masks have to be worn and social distancing is very good with sanitiser at the start/ finish.
Well worth a visit.

We visited the Corinium Museum before going to the Cirencester amphitheater and absolutely loved it. We received a really warm welcome explaining the layout and exhibit areas, and then the content itself was fabulous. Loved how it was laid out with reconstructions and massive pieces like the mosaic floors and columns. So much more than just looking at pieces in a cabinet, and the texts were very informative. Has piqued my interest in Roman history and left me hungry for more!

We pre booked our tickets the day before but were pleasantly surprised to find the museum empty apart from two other people at 10am. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The displays were informative and well sequenced. My children loved it. It felt very safe and well organised in terms of Covid19 measures. A lovely way to spend an hour.

This museum is a must if you are interested in the history of Cirencester, which was the second largest Roman settlement in Britain. Wonderful mosaics, jewelry, stonework. And many hands-on exhibits, excellent for children but also for adults. Spacious layout and bright displays.

My friend and I are avid followers of all things Roman Empire. This museum has a dedicated area for that particular period. The floor mosaics are some of the most impressive found in Roman Brittania. The 'lay-out' of all the time zone periods (Prehistoric through to the English Civil War) are most compelling. Having visited many history museums throughout the U.K this is certainly one of the 'must see' if you are visiting Cirencester.

Hi Will, thanks for your question. Admission for under 5's is free and we have lots of interactive activities which will appeal to a four year old.
