I came to Rye for the day with a couple good friends on a wet and windy day in December, with the goal being a nice walk around a picturesque Old English Town. I wasn't disappointed. Rye is a beautiful little place, tucked away like a hidden gem. We first got an introduction to the town at the tourist centre,... More

Amazing that this bar has been around since 1420 - great fireplace and stories with a poem by Rudyard Kipling outside as well..............

Ok so it's an old bar, with a nice cosy feel. However, be warned it's very small and becomes packed easily.

Thank you for your review. The Giants Fireplace Bar contains one of England's largest Inglenook Fireplaces, which can be seen on our website. The building was rebuilt in 1420, and as you say, it is a very popular place for local people and for the many people who visit The Mermaid and Rye. More

My wife and I spent the day in Rye during half term and as I had stayed at the Mermaid as a child forty years before with my parents I wanted to go there for a lunchtime drink. We were welcomed so warmly by the hotel manager who suggested we sat in the Giants Fireplace bar. The fire was roaring... More

Been to Rye before but somehow managed to miss going up the cobbled street (Mermaid Street). Managed it this time and found Mermaid Inn about 50 yards up. It really looks the part of a medieval inn so we went in and was amazed to find out that it was indeed dating back to 1400's and building existing there before... More

Dating back to 1156 this restaurant/bar/Inn is a hot spot even if you only need a beer or two. Sitting in the bar you can imagine the sailers of centuries ago sitting in the same spot drinking and drinking some more. Otherwise nothing special just historic.

I visited the Mermaid and asked for a Latte with an extra shot and a dah of caramel. I was told that it is not a coffee shop and that they could only serve a normal latte. I was amazed when the the bartender pressed a button in a machine and within 5 seconds a ready made latte appeared! Probably... More

Thank you for your review. In answer to your question....The Mermaid is a top hotel because the focus is on running a top hotel, and not running a coffee shop. That is why we receive such fulsome praise on the many review sites. There are many fine coffee shops in Rye, which you clearly have explored and praised. We can... More

The perfect spot for an afternoon drink or two. Tonnes of atmosphere, history and charm. Outdoor seating for those sunny days too. Friendly staff. Looks like a fantastic place to stay the night too. Our favourite pub in rye!

The fireplace is huge! The bar is as gorgeous as the whole hotel. Full of atmosphere and dark wood. Windows have stained glass. Food is good. Tables are very low so having a snack is easier!
