Originally a 12th century fortified bishop's palace which was leased to Sir Walter Raleigh and later became a powerful Civil War Royalist base. It fell to Parliament after a fierce 11 day siege. Now a romantic ruin and home to a great range of wildlife, birds and plants. A perfect picnic spot. Child friendly and dog friendly.

The Old Castle is in the grounds of the new Castle and the grounds are fabulous. The Castle used to be open most days but unfortunately of late it is very hit and miss as to when it is open. There is a shoot on...More

Enjoyed a nice afternoon at Sherborne Old Castle with our two dogs, who both seem to really appreciate historic sites more than beaches! No toilet facility on site, which is worth noting. And no bin - unless you walk to the one at the end...More

Sherborne in general is a great place to visit - lovely town, great Abbey and two castles. Also good parking. Old castle is a ruin but very very romantic and with great views over new castle. Has littles EH shop on site with friendly staff...More

Beautiful castle. Ideal for family day out as kids can run around while adults admire the ruins. Best bit about English Heritage is that they are not precious and snobby about their properties (and the price is very reasonable) and welcome people to come and...More

As with a lot of smaller English Heritage places, the facilities are less than desirable, a portaloo be a good example. But the on site staff person was very welcoming and friendly. The ruin itself is standard, not a huge amount to explore, but the...More

You need £2 for parking in coins, but this is taken off your entry price. Or park at the church lower down for free if you haven't got change. Tidy well maintained castle ruins. Not to be mixed up with the new castle next to...More

Although now in ruins English Heritage are doing a good job at keeping it as preserved as possible for us and generations to come. Compared to some ruined castles there is not too much to see, but with the help of the various notice boards...More

If you want to build a castle, this would be the ideal site. The English Heritage caretaking shows this beautiful ruin off to perfection, the grounds are beautifully kept and the ticket office and gift shop have a very helpful custodian. Well worth a half...More

An interesting relic of our past to spend an hour perusing our history. Wouldnt do it without the guidebook (£4). We enjoyed it on a beautiful summers day, if wet might not have been so much fun. But a stunning ruin, especially some of the...More

This is a great place to spend an hour or two. Stunning old ruins of a castle. A audio commentary would be useful - the new castle is only a short distance away. Worth a look though.
