About
Tucked away in a deep wooded valley, Berry Pomeroy Castle is the perfect romantic ruin with a colourful history of intrigue. Within the 15th-century defences of the Pomeroy family castle, looms the dramatic ruined shell of its successor, the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours. Begun in around 1560 and ambitiously enlarged from around 1600, their mansion was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon, a match for Longleat and Audley End. Never completed, and abandoned by 1700, it became the focus of blood-curdling ghost stories, recounted in the audio tour. The location of the castle makes it ideal for walkers who can explore the nearby beautiful woodland or you can enjoy a light lunch, home made cake or restorative cup of tea in the cafe. Within a short drive are Totnes Castle and Dartmouth Castle, making it an ideal day out for families.

FILTHY toilet with faeces on door lock
Sep. 2021 • Solo
Took a visit here with my elderly parents today, the ruins itself & the location are stunning and there are some lovely walks around.
I am only giving it a 3 star as I think it’s pretty disgusting that they only had one toilet available which was behind the shop, there were toilets behind the cafe but they had a sign on saying “closed for your safety” which I’m assuming is to do with Covid which is utterly ridiculous. The toilet I unfortunately used had a sign on saying “cleaned regularly”, well it must have been cleaned by a blind person because not only was it filthy on the floors etc there was actual dried FAECES on the interior door handle lock!!!!! I was absolutely horrified because several people had come & gone out of that loo before me & clearly touched the lock and therefore the faeces. Thankfully I saw it and didn’t touch it and I cleaned it off with some anti bac wipes I thankfully had in my bag!!!!!

This is not acceptable when there are so many people visiting. Please sort it out!!! The nearby bushes would have been a better cleaner option!!!

The toilet next to the cafe, are managed by Castle Cafe, which is not owned by English Heritage. This toilet was open all day. Excellent castle ruin in beautiful setting
Aug. 2021 • Family
Lovely atmospheric castle ruin in a beautiful setting. Three different types of architectural style as the castle was adapted, improved, then abandoned and left to ruin. Good audio guide and excellent hide and seek qualities for the kids.

Never again will I attend this place, money being taken for nothing.
Aug. 2021 • Family
We paid £20 for our family to experience Berry Pomeroy Castle, we were in a rush but had an hour to spare.
We were given some audio devices that were not working, the castle was bare no real interactive experience.

We gave up after 30 mins of aimlessly walking around looking at a destroyed castle.

I went back to the cabin to ask for the refund policy explaining the audio devices were not functioning, the advisor shouted at me to leave refusing to give me a copy of the policy. Never again will I attend this place and I hope to hell I do not meet this character out on the street. If I were you, this place is not worth the money, dont go...

Atmospheric castle ruins
Aug. 2021
Berry Pomeroy is reputed to be haunted, but on a fine summer's day that is not something you need worry about. The castle ruins are set in a very picturesque setting, and are very atmospheric and photogenic. The audio guide is excellent and explains everything you are looking at. It usually is not swarming with hordes of tourists, so makes a lovely afternoon out.

Friends Day Out
Jun. 2021 • Friends
It was an absolutely beautiful day out, even with the Covid restrictions in place (you couldn’t go down into the cellars/dungeons due to close areas & also a one way system but could go around as much as you wanted)
So peaceful & quiet all around, very easy excess & plenty of rooms to get lost in lol fantastic photography today as well, was lovely & Sunday & the cafe outside was very nice 😊 stopped for lunch afterwards & all the staff very helpful & cheerful 😄 I am a member of English Heritage & will definitely be going back again 🤓

A dog friendly little castle
Jul. 2021
Excellent little castle nestled away in lovely Devon woodland. Peaceful and not too busy on the day we went (but the cafe was shut...only downside). Audio guide was great, lots of detail about the structure and the lives of the previous inhabitants. Love the fact that this, as with many English Heritage sites, is dog friendly. Holly Terrier enjoyed her latest castle and the walk through the valley below afterwards.

Haunted Berry Pomeroy Castle!!!
Jul. 2021 • Solo
Have been to Berry Pomeroy Castle for many years and it's definitely haunted and saw the white lady back in 2019 at precisely 1.45am on the lawn near the pay hut. Have had many experiences here and apart of a paranormal investigator team. It's not haunted 24/7 but some will have experiences and some won't.

Gorgeous place and cream tea!!!!
May 2021 • Friends
Had a really enjoyable few hours here after a Sunday lunch nearby.
It was a gorgeous day. The gent in the small shop there was helpful with the online booking and good instructions on how to use the small device you get to scan on your way around the castle.
But the highlight of the visit was the cream tea. Believe me, we had various cream teas on our weeks holiday, but this one was by far and away the best...... with the most stunning views
We’ll be back for much of the same again when we revisit in September
Only recommendation I would give is that you need more passing areas on the access road
