A few hours in the Past
Jul. 2021
We spent a fascinating time learning about the tough lives of those poor people transported by sea in dire conditions from Plymouth to the New World. We hear actors voices reliving the experiences of people on board and the horrible treatment meted out by the masters. There are wonderful models of sailing ships and technical detail. There are three floors and a lift. A souvenir shop and information desk.

Disappointing, could easily be improved

I'm sorry but this museum was just bad :( It's perfectly placed to serve tourists interested in learning more about Plymouths most interesting historical event - the departure of the Mayflower. My mum was really keen to go as she's been reading about the pilgrims recently but we just left confused and disappointed. We read every scrap of information but learned very little. The text was not laid out clearly or chronologically and we kept reading passages that assumed knowledge from other sections that we werent guided to first. We had so many questions remaining - most of the info here led up to them leaving plymouth and then picks up after they arrive, but what happened on the actual voyage itself!? There was a map of the journey of the two ships at the end of the exhibition and we couldnt work it out using the information we had read before that. The most interesting part of the mayflower story is the people who were on board and their stories but other than a list of names that was lost here. I had a look at the wikipedia page about the pilgrims after we left and learned much more from that than I did at this museum that I paid to experience. The reason I'm writing this review isnt to scorn but to encourage the museum to PLEASE DO BETTER, theres so much potential to do something interesting here (even in this small space) and it's completely missed. After this disappointing visit we went to the 400 mayflower exhibition in the box and had such an incredible experience, once that exhibition is gone the Mayflower museum should be hosting all the stories and statistics and history for tourists to enjoy going forward. There we learned about the pilgrims motivations to leave, how the two groups (the amsterdam group on the speedwell and england group) came together, what happened on the actual journey across the ocean, what happened when they arrived, the ancestry of the pilgrims today, the impact of the colonists on native americans, etc. Its such an interesting story but we were just left bored and confused here. If you're going to charge entry please make more effort! Peace and love

Great stop

You could wander in here for hours. The museum was well organized and child friendly. The only downside was that there wasn’t a bathroom for public use.

Lacks content

What is on display is nice and well-presented (several activities for children too), but the space did not feel well-used. The museum itself is small but many other museums pack much more into similar sized spaces. I'm sure there's more one could write/display about the Mayflower than the little that is described here.

Well worth visiting

The main part of the museum is excellent and relates the history of Plymouth in a brilliant and user friendly way. Lots of film clips and hands on exhibits. Bright and airy feel to the place and excellent facilities and lovely staff
I gave an overall score of 4 out of 5 as the Mayflower exhibition was not as good as I expected Although it gave plenty of facts and figures and it set the record straight factually, it felt as if it was squashed in as an afterthought..... you exited into a large underused room which perhaps could have been used to extend Mayflower

A Little Disappointing

It’s very hard to rate this and describe it to be honest. It’s over 3 floors and does tell the story of the Pilgrim Fathers and the Mayflower but it just lacks some punch. It would have been great to see some artefacts from the Mayflower but I don’t think any have survived or I assume that. It didn’t take very long to go round the museum, probably 30 mins or so.

Disappointing

Disappointing, not even worth the £4 entry fee really. I’ve been to free entry museums that are better than this to be honest. Also doesn’t really acknowledge that there were other settlers prior to this which was disappointing and a bit misleading.

This could be so much better. It was interesting and not too expensive. I would have liked to see some information about names of the pilgrims and where they were from.

A lovely way to spend an hour whilst exploring the Barbican. Reasonably priced too!

I took my mother and father-in-law to this museum prior to having lunch in a local restaurant and I must say, all of us were impressed with the experience. It is a relatively small museum but the entrance fee reflects that and offers good value of money. With the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower sailing imminent (6th September I think) it is a must for anyone wanting to consider the importance of this trip.
