As an active naval base you can't just expect to rock up and walk around. The yard does host a lot of external events though, if you get the chance take it! The place is full of history and the ships/subs are interesting to see

If you are in Plymouth visit the Naval Heritage Museum. We had a wonderful guided tour with a retired naval architect who was a mine of information. I could have stayed all day there was so much to see. I understand this museum is currently unfunded, is run entirely by volunteers and has many exhibits that cannot be displayed due... More

These docks must have been amazing in their day, firstly the docks buildings although they are now used for other things, with a little imagination you can see the officers going into the buildings and getting their manifest sorted out. Then lookout to the water, the day we were there there was only a few boats in the dock, boat... More

Superb, unreliable taxi companies, let down by three companies after pre booking the night before. Mariners Guest House totally amazeballs the best place to stay

Good modernisation and reuse of dockyard buildings of impressive architectural style. Handy walk to Cremyll Ferry for Edgecombe estate. Some buildings re-used as modes gallery and huge restaurant with licence, and alfresco. All spotlessly clean Ferry Point for cross harbour ferry to Plymouth Barbican.

So far as we can tell the only visiting within Devonport Naval Base is on Navy Days and occasional pre planned escorted visits to a few sites within Drake and the dockyard. Devonport is apparently bigger and more active than Portsmouth but has none of the preserved famous iconic ships like Victory and Warrior and no constantly open buildings or... More

Unlike most I have had the privilege to wander around this historic area mostly in days gone by when I refitted government craft. The buildings are spectacular, the place oozes history, and thoughts of far flung adventures. If you get the chance take a Tamar cruise and if you are lucky the will be a selection of hardware in port.... More

I was the fourth generation to work there. My father born, 1910, was an engineer and a helmet diver during the 2nd WW. His father was born in Passage West, Cork, Ireland and was a shipwright/carpenter in Devonport. His father was also born in Passage West and was a shipwright at Victoria Docks there before migrating to Plymouth to be... More
