Quite small but fantastic to visit

It is only a small attraction but the site is in perfect condition and the audio-guide is a great experience for when walking around to get a full understanding and context

St Mawes castle is run by English Heritage - which we are members of. Built by Henry VIII it boasts some great sea views and is well presented. It may not be big by castle standards but it makes for a very interesting afternoon visit. Staff in the shop etc welcoming and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

I popped in to the castle on a wet and windy Feb afternoon. It is much bigger inside than it seems outside and very well preserved. The audio commentary is excellent and really interesting. The appalling weather did not dampen my enthusiasm for the castle, although I could not explore the grounds or tarry for long on the outside parts!... More

Well worth a visit to this castle. We had a great day. The audio headphones brought it all alive with a bit of imagination.

We walked up to the castle from our base at the Ship and Castle Hotel. St Mawes Castle was a coastal artillery fortress from the time of Henry the 8th. It was built to keep the Spanish and French at bay. It was manned with heavy ship sinking guns which can be seen on the castle tour. The castle opens... More

With the wedding service being held in a grand room in the circular keep this was possibly the most beautiful and romantic wedding I have ever attended. Guests walked around the foot of the castle walls as we drank champagne after the ceremony and look out over the sea. We moved to a marquee to the side of the castle... More

Although it only opens at the weekends this time of year it is still worth going and the big plus is that you do not have to pay the £3 carpark fee but still get to stroll around the exterior. Dear old Henry built this and its brother which you can see across the water situated at Pendennis point falmouth.... More

We tried to visit, but the English Heritage website specified different opening hours to those on the sign that we found when we arrived to find it closed... spoilt an otherwise good visit to St Mawes.

Wonderful historic castle with exceptional views across the Fal estuary. The site manager is a great chap and has the history of the castle at his fingertips,

We visited the castle on Saturday 29th October - six adults and four children. As soon as we arrived we were treated to a gun firing demonstration and a short interesting talk on the castle's fire power defences through the wars from 1542. The Castle and buildings have been maintained in a wonderful state and it was easy to spend... More
