Ely Museum, a bright and friendly local history museum, located in the Bishop's Gaol in the centre of the historical city of Ely. The Museum is the history centre for the Isle of Ely & the Fens and it takes you on a journey through time from prehistory to the twentieth century.Displays include original prison cells, fossils that can be touched, Roman remains and an archive film of the Fens including punt guns and eel catching.A museum guide, children's activities, toilets and a gift shop make this an ideal destination for all of the family.

Interesting little museum

It is a small museum but an ideal way to spend an hour or two. There are some interactive things like dressing up for children. It shows the history of Ely and the area.

Step out of the back door of the Lamb hotel and you will find this museum. We simply love unassuming museums that must struggle to be viable yet pack so much into their collections. This is no exception, a TARDIS formed from the old gaol there is a lot to appreciate and discover. As ever with so many museums, the... More

Ely Museum is a good museum. It is hard for me to say great only because I really love the setup of the Burwell Museum. But I think that those living here temporarily, such as the Americans stationed here, it is a good place to visit so that they learn more about the history of the area that they are... More

As we went as a couple of oldies - we found it wasn't really for us, but if you took your children or grandchildren it is the perfect place to be especially on a cold wet day! There was so much going on for the children - story telling (making history so exciting) - explaining about wicker work - about... More

photos and stories of the locality known as the Fens around Ely from the different Royal air force stations of WW2 to how they have now closed and used the hangers for storage and distribution purposes. History of the cathedral all put into normal language that every body will be able to understand.

I must be biased because my father used to work in a little local museum but I find these places fun and amusing. The effort they go to to collect and preserve their local identity is amazing. The pride for their local area is great. I learnt a lot from being there, more so than Oliver Cromwell's house. We need... More

We enjoyed visiting this museum - a lot of information on the history of the area and good signage. Well worth a visit.
