Unless you get into the college the bridge is only really visible form a boat. We did walk across it, and while you get nice river views, you don't get much of the bridge. So, a punting tour or rental it is.
Of course the best place to get a good view of the Bridge of Sighs is from the water, so a trip on a punt really is a must.

A visit to St John's College is a must for Cambridge but the entry fee of £10 for a short look around considering no Visitors are allowed on the bridge, perhaps a little much. The bridge can be seen from punts on the river.
We hadn’t realised that it was within St Johns College until my phone satnav kept suggesting we walk through walls and then went haywire!
I eventually asked the porter at the gate,who explained we’d have to pay £20,I think,to gain entrance and view it.
