Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful caves.
Our tour guide was very friendly and answered most of our questions.
I enjoyed this tour, this is definitely a place you should visit if you are looking for adventure and also you are interested in geography and archeology.
The temperature drops in the caves so wear something warm.
A great way to spend the weekend!

Very friendly, accomodating and knowledgable tour guides. I have been into a few caves around the world, and what stands out about this cave system (although smaller), is that they restrict how many people can enter at any given time. This means the space is not crowded, and moving around is easy and lines of sight unobscured.
Good insight into the history of the area, funny and easy going tour guides you give you a range of experinces within the cave. Nice to go to after you have done a guided safari in the safari park the caves are situated in. Food and drinks are avalible there.

My partner and I stayed over at Maropeng Boutique Hotel and got to do a combo tour with this at a 20% discount.
The day and tour was chilled and pretty straightforward. It takes roughly an hour or so and involves a lot of walking up and down stairs, crawling in relatively confined spaces so come with your energy levels ready and heightened. But the beauty of all is that it's all worth it.
You will get to see beautiful calcite and dolomitic geology across the tour with insights into the fossils, paleontology and cave formation. There is a museum which is interactive with insightful information on display.
Our tour guide was a lady named Tshepiso, who was very informative, precise, audible, easy to relate to and to engage, and made the experience fun.
The only downside was that there needs to be a smooth co-ordination between the Maropeng and the Sterkfontein Caves tour, we found ourselves always wondering and asking where to go from one to the other but besides that, I would recommend this outing, perfect if you are in search of an insightful yet chilled outing in the Gauteng area. Fit for the whole family.

We took the guided tour into the cave. The guide was knowledgeable and informative.
Helmets are provided for safety and inside the Caves photo are allowed but some areas are narrow where we had to crawl through it.
At the end of the tour, remember to rub the statute! there is a choice of his nose (for luck) or his fingers (for wisdom).
We rubbed the nose and it really did bring us good luck throughout our entire tour in Africa!!

Was a very nice trip to these caves. About 45 mins from Pretoria. Takes about an hour to do the guided tour. Very good food and toilet facilities. The tour guide made the trip - he was very good.
Nice place to sit and eat lunch in a very well set up eatery. Safe parking is available.
The only down side is the rampant evolutionary diatribe that cane with the tour, but I’m used to filtering that out. Hehe.

The Sterkfontein Caves are interesting for the discoveries of human fossils over time and thus helping us to understand the concept of our evolution. However, there are no fossils preserved or kept inside the caves at present. The guide only points out to the spots and areas where fossils were discovered. The walkway inside the cave could be very challenging as there are some spots where one has to completely bend down to get through. Individuals with physical disabilities and little children should avoid taking this tour. There is a small museum at the entrance which everyone should visit prior to the guided tour of the caves for a better understanding. Visiting these caves should be done in combination with visiting Maropeng on the same day to get a complete understanding of evolution of man.

Our overseas visitors had a great time in the caves. The guide was very good.
The trip was definitely not for old and infirm as pathway was quite steep and narrow

This was so much fun; Sammy (our guide) was incredibly knowledgeable. You do need to squeeze into small places, which requires crouching, so bear that in mind when visiting, so for example, don’t wear an impractical denim skirt... Some nice stair work too, but all done at a manageable pace for the little less than fit.

You walk through the caves alone. Have to walk with a guide who talk about evolution blah blah. Expensive entry

Hi,
I would love to come do this! But I just need some info to plan this trip.
How much is the cost per person?
Is spare, dry clothes necessary?
What's the minimum amount of people do they take (in a group - I can imagine taking only 2 or 3 people is a shlep)
Thanks
Eduan

Sorry for delay in replying
It wasn't expensive but we booked a combined ticket with the Cradle of Humankind museum and I can't remember the total cost but it really wasn't expensive
Re clothing we managed to stay clean and dry but you could get a bit wet/mucky if unlucky - we didn't have to change clothes.
Re number in party - you just get added to a group so don't worry about that. This was a good and interesting tour but as my report on The Cradle of Humankind state that museum is more for kids than adults imho
