We were taken from our river cruise ship by coach over the Rhine on a ferry and up to the view point car park . From here we walked for ten minutes to the view point. Great views up and down the Rhine. We had not been told of the Loreley myth so we were confused when we came across a huge metal comb chained to an art feature. Some people informed us of the mermaid down below and gave us a quick run down of the “siren like tale “. We saw the mermaid when we were travelling along the river bank on our return journey. Good views on a clear day. There is a cafe and toilets that you pay for.

Loreley is the massive mountainous bulge that banks the Rhine river just after the small town of Sankt Goarshausen, where it bottlenecks the river and makes the boats passage rather difficult. It is also a figure of German mythology symbolized as a young and beautiful woman seducing sailors by her singing. The place is amongst the UNESCO World Heritage sites list, along with the rest of the Middle Rhine Valley , its vineyards and castles and is the heart of the "Romantic Rhine" area. The most interesting views are from the top of the Mountain, that you can reach from the bank through a 45 minutes strenuous walk (fitness and walking shoes mandatory). There's an interpretation center and a restaurant on top. The site can be reached by car too, but at the time of visiting (june 2021) roadworks blocked the passage through Sankt Goarhausen, the easier way to reach the top was walking. There's a free but small parking 500m away from the statue of the Loreley along the Rhine.

We sailed past the Loreley on a river cruise heading to Amsterdam. It's apparently a treacherous part of the river because of the narrowness at that point. Certainly, it was interesting watching the movement our very long vessel had to make. Our Cruise Director gave us a history of the area and the legend and it all sounded wonderful. In the end, though, it appeared to be just a tad over-hyped.

We saw a statue in the distance.

Statue is pretty nice and nice story behind. However the best thing is the point of view up in the gorge. Busy market place but the views are just stunning. Excellent and extremely beautiful trip by KD boat. We take a train from Frankfurt to Mainz and jumped to KD boat heading Sankt Goarshausen. Then we walked to the Loreley sites and took a train back to Frankfurt. Great day with tens of castles

In German mythology, Loreley is the name of a water fairy (siren) who lived in the Rhine River. When her lover didn't return, she jumped to her death from a large rock where the river narrows. Her spirit is said to inhabit that rock, drawing sailors into it as they pass by and meet their doom. Nonetheless, my wife and I had to visit the statue. Somehow we survived. While it is a fairly easy walk to the statue, it does take some time. There is also a sign warning how treacherous the oath can be. My only caution is to see it at the right time of day. When we visited, the sun was our nemesis and she, while beautiful, was tough to see. However, I can feel her beauty.

My rhine cruise made a great deal of fuss about the Lorelei in the Rhine gorge and celebrated its passing by providing us with a glass of sparkling wine. I think they did so to distract us from the fact that the legend is commemorated by a rather small statue.

The legend says she called sailors to their doom on the rocks at the base of gorge. The statue commemorating her on the riverside is small- you will need your binoculars to see her from a river cruiser

The views of the gorge are lovely but I really couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. there are plenty of distinctive and beautiful sights along the Rhine but this was really over hyped. Of course it might have been more impressive up close and personal!

Overrated and you need your binoculars to see anything

This was much hyped on our Rhine cruise. The outcropping with the flags is Loreley and there is a statue along the river. It's probably in a class with Plymouth Rock, The Little Mermaid, and so many other things we've heard about. Slightly disappointing, but at least one can say they were there.

Great and beautiful rock that fits the tales written about the sirens. We saw it from the boat tour and it was well worth the extra time to get there.

It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the river up to the overlook, but in my opinion the view from there is just OK. Parking is 2€, and the visitor's center is free. If you're looking for the statue of Loreley, it's not up on the cliff. It's actually located down on the riverbank, as shown in the attached photo or on Google Maps.

BTW -- the legend of Loreley is really not that interesting. Here's the deal: There's a relatively sharp turn in the Rhine River, and boats crashed there quite often. Why do so many boats crash? It can't be because the captains -- all men -- didn't know how to navigate the sharp turn. There must be some other explanation. I know! There is a young maiden (her name is Loreley, of course) up on the cliff, who -- because she is so sexy -- distracts those poor captains while they are simply trying to do their job. So it was A WOMAN'S FAULT that those men kept crashing their boats, and it had absolutely nothing to do with their incompetance or lack of experience. Seriously! Mansplaining at its finest. . .
