The City of Moonee Valley adopted a Master Plan for Fairbairn Park in 2013. The Park is one of the biggest parks in the municipality; it is popular with dog owners, as it is an off-leash park. Dog owners are expected to pick up doggie litter deposited by their mutts. Fairbairn Park is used for netball, golf and tennis. The Riverside Golf and Tennis Master Plan is in the process of comp;etion. Fairbairn Park is bordered by the Maribyrnong River, which is the major wateway in the City of Moonee Valley. I've never heard of anyone swimming in the Maribyrnong River, but it is popular with canoeists.

It is a Dog free range park that is well set up to cater to many dogs, with a huge area to choose from. There are dog drinking bowls on the water fountains. There are two Kid’s playgrounds, barbecue area and seating in the park is provided, along with two toilet blocks at the playgrounds either end of the park. It is shady on a hot day or night. A great place to go down to on a Hot Summer’s night for a barbecue dinner, as often there is a cool breeze, or you could just take a bottle of wine and a cheese platter to sit and relax. Dogs are not permitted in the play area, however the barbecue/picnic tables are on the edge of this area where the dogs are permitted. I think common sense prevails and as long as your dog is not running madly into the playground area, no one seems to mind or get upset as everyone knows this is a free range park. There is also plenty of grassed area to picnic on a rug in this quiet, peaceful park. I have been going to this park now for 31 years dog walking, picnicking and barbecuing along with all the regular people I have met over this time, just about every night. It also has plenty of parking available. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PARK.

If you like dog friendly off leash inner city parks with a constant transition of new dogs (with owners attached) then then this is the park for you. The Maribyrnong River is still tidal at this point, at different times of year you see Bream, jellyfish and at dusk you can see the large Native Water Rats, cruising on the surface of the water.

I go there every day to walk the dog. It is an off the lead park for dogs and many people are regulars, so the dogs have a great time. Also, they have the river to swim in and that is great especially in summer.
