Huihanggudao (Huihang Ancient Road) is an ancient trade route followed by the merchants from Anhui province to Zhejiang province. It has important role in Chinese history like silk route and tea route.
It is the best trekking route near to Shanghai , away from the crowd and hectic busy city. Many people doesn’t know about it , so the place is not very crowded like other Chinese tourist places. We have visited there during April 2014.
The whole trekking route is around 20 km, we completed it in one and a half days and if you are experienced you can complete it in one day.
How to get in and get out:
1) Take an overnight train to Jixi (we travelled from Shanghai)
2) Take a bus /taxi to the starting of the route – Jiangnan Diyi Guang
3) At the end of the trekking we reached Yonglai village in Zhejiang Province.
4) Take taxi or bus from there to Hangzhou
Where to Stay:
1) Accommodation facilities are minimal in the route
2) We stayed at a point Xixue tang (xixue hall). There is a small restaurant and hotel. They even lend tents.
3) Seems there is another option also at Lantian Ao Point.
4) It is better to carry some food during the trekking.

We decided to do this hike during Qingming festival weekend, hoping it wouldn't be as packed as many famous sites are in China during holidays. We weren't disappointed. While there were plenty of bodies during the first couple of kilometers, it was never unbearable and petered out around when the path changed from stone to dirt. We started at the Anhui side in Jixi and hiked over to the eastern gate in Zhejiang. Tickets to get into the park were 77 yuan per adult and 42 for kids 1.2 to 1.4 meters. If you go west to east, there's a lot more uphill than when going east to west, and some of the climbs are pretty impressively steep, making for a hot sweaty walk in the sun. The scenery is spectacular, though. There are quite a few stalls selling snacks on the way up, and a few places that looked like they probably could cook up actually meals. It would have been fun to slow down a bit to explore some of the villages we passed through and maybe camp up on Lantian Ao or stay in one of the guesthouses on the way, but we only had time to do the whole 12+km route in a single day instead of splitting it into two. The route is pretty well marked, but there were a few points where we were happy to have access to an offline map.

Huihanggudao is an ancient trail used by the merchants from Zhejiang region to Anhui region. I started off the hike from the Zhejiang side. You can buy the walking stick from the villagers for RMB 2 at the start of the trail. This walking stick became my saviour as it really aided my hike. The trail was quite easy to follow. It was only difficult that day because of the light rain throughout the day.
You do not have to carry much food and water (keeping your hiking gear light) as there are plenty of stalls along route where you can buy and also take a rest. The trail is about 16km and takes around 5-6 hrs to complete depending on your stamina. The sceneries along the way are beautiful and I took plenty of pictures. Oct is a great month to hike as the weather is cooling.

Nice trail and meanwhile you’ve several possibilities to buy some snacks and drinks. We parked our car in the main parking in Fulingzhen and hiked all the way up to Lantian Ao.
Unfortunately at Snowhall a friendly police officer kept us waiting for more then one hour explaining us, that we violated the Chinese law ... foreigners are not allowed in this park ... ok, after done discussion, we could continue our way.
Therefor my recommendation to take a guide!
At Lantian Ao we left the main trail to the right and went down a trail to Tainan (大南). From there a local offered to drive us back with his car for 180 RMB, which is cheap considering the long way back to our parking (45 min). On the way we drove through the Zhangshan Grand Canyon (also nice)
All local people are btw very friendly. Definitely I’d go there again, if the law would allow me to go ...

How far is this from Shanghai? Is it possible to get picked up at our hotel?

It’s quite difficult to communicate even though the people are all very friendly but ... nearly nobody speaks any English
