The Campbell River Maritime Heritage Centre is home to the historic BCP45...

The Campbell River Maritime Heritage Centre is home to the historic BCP45 seine fishing boat. The boat was pictured on the Canadian five dollar bill from 1972 to 1986. She was brought to the centre in 2002 and was restored on site by a crew of volunteers. Today visitors can go aboard the BCP45 and explore the galley, bunks, engine room, the head(bathroom) and wheelhouse. In addition to the BCP45 the centre boasts a large collection of marine related artifacts ranging from vintage outboard motors, weapons, navy paraphernalia and navigational instruments to the Margaret M a sailboat built by Arthur Barnes a blind one armed man and so much more. There are also activities for kids, in addition to exploring the boat children can learn to tie nautical knots at the rope board and how to spell their name in flag language. Guided tours are offered from 12-4 and are included with the price of admission. The Maritime Heritage centre is self-funded and support themselves through rentals of various rooms. The centre is also home to the Campbell River Genealogy society. After visiting the Maritime Heritage Centre, many guests also like to take advantage of the free parking and visit the nearby aquarium, the pier and downtown Campbell River.

Some museums are dark and present an overwhelming amount of material. The Maritime Heritage Centre shows a lot of information about a narrow range of subjects - shipping, fishing, and underwater exploration primarily - and 90 minutes or so is a good length of time for most people to go through it. The bright rooms went a long way to... More

My wife and I enjoyed our walk around this center. Very interesting displays and written articles. Our most favorite was meeting Ted the tour guide, who gave us the personalized tour of the inside of the ship. He was so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. My wife found Ted so easy to talk too and understand ( English is her second... More

This "museum" does have the original fishing boat that was on the $5 Canadian bill, but other than the odd assortment of maritime artifacts, it isn't as good as the Campbell River Museum. We felt that this is more of a rental venue. We were here when the Winter/Christmas market was on and had a look through the exhibits at... More

The Maritime Heritage Centre has a once a year event, the first 3 Sundays in December, which hosts a Christmas Market (Farmer's Market brought indoors) and most of the artefacts have to be moved to accommodate the vendors. It is each Sunday only so the museum is fully operational and all artefacts are in place during the week. It is... More

I have brought visitors here many times. It is an informative, interesting visit for people not familiar with the fishing culture of Campbell River in the last 100 years.

We visited the Maritime Heritage Centre this past week and spent the better part of a morning with a guide, touring the centre. Brian, our guide, had been involved from the end of the restoration project (of salmon fleet boat BCP 45) and had a wealth of information to share. Besides the maritime and military memorabilia donated by local collectors,... More

You can get a sense of life on the coast in 'the olden days' at this gem of a Museum? Exhibit? One of those places that can make an entire trip more memorable.
