Rangitoto Lava Workout Hike
Feb. 2020 • Family
Great auckland side trip excursion if you are into working for your views..the summit track takes about 1.5-2hr for the moderate hiker (and may include taking alternate routes up to the summit viewpoint which i recommend). The views of auckland city and surround are farther than awe-inspiring, unlike most things in NZ. Still would recommend for anyone who wants a workout with some nature incentive. Book fullers ferry in advance. Don’t park in the cruise ship bay.

Not too hard and great view at the end

My friend and I did this hike - it only really got steep as you neared the summit. There were a few stops along the way to do some readings and read up on the islands history. Beautiful changing landscape as you ascend.

A nice half day trip with awesome views !

We enjoyed our afternoon summit walk on Rangitoto. The track is uphill but not too strenuous. It recommends 1 hour each way but we did it in 45 mins each way. Take time to stop and enjoy the view at the top & explore the lava caves on the way back. We took the 12:15 fullers ferry there and the 4:00 return. Make sure you don’t miss the last ferry and take all food/snacks 🙃✌🏼🥾

Had a fantastic walk to the top of Rangitoto.
Definitely not as long as estimated if you have a good base fitness.

Hiking on a hot day
Jan. 2019 • Family
First time hiking Rangitoto Island and the view is so worth it!
Jump on a ferry from town or Devonport which is a 25 minute ride to Rangitoto.
Follow the track and make sure you take food and plenty of water, sunscreen and hats - there’s no supplies on the island and because of the black rock - it radiates heat.
Give yourself a good 3-4 hours at least for the trip.

Great View
Jan. 2019 • Friends
After a short ferry journey from Auckland we started the summit track to Rangitoto. The track is very well marked and is a gentle incline all the way to the summit. The final part has a series of stairs onto a viewing platform which is very well done. The views are breathtaking. We visited on a very warm day and had been advised that it would be extremely warm but we found it fine. Take water and snacks as there is nowhere to buy anything on the island!

Great Walk, Awesome View
Jan. 2019 • Family
Great walk to the top and what an amazing view of Auckland from the summit.

The ferry ride to and from Rangitoto Island was only took 25mins. We recommend to wear good shoes with good grip. Bring food and water as there is no shops on Rangitoto Island.

It took our family with 8 & 12 yr old about 35-40 mins to walk up. We walked up fast though a leisurely walk would have been easier. But the kids wanted to get to the summit ASAP.

The first 20 mins of the walk there wasn’t much to see and as you got higher you get more of a Seaview. We stopped to take photos of the crater, the volcano is pretty dormant with the crater covered in lush greenery.

It took us 1 hour to get back to the wharf as we didn’t go back down the summit track. The track was pretty slippery and it was like walking on marbles but still a great walk. You need to get to the Island early if you are planning on seeing the whole/most of island. It’s bigger than we though and then there is the Motutapu Island that you can also walk to.

Great walk on this beautiful volcanic island just 30mins from the CBD.

A 30 minute ferry ride ($36.00 return) from down town Auckland this young ~600 year old volcano offers up some great walks including the one to the summit ~260 metres high giving great views of Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf.
The walk / climb to the top is ~ 60 minutes each way. From the top drop off the summit to the other side and walk the coastal track back to the ferry wharf or return the way you came up and visit the lava caves on the way down. Great predator free island.

Don’t miss the caves
Jul. 2018 • Friends
There are several routes you can take to the summit and they all lead there in the end so veer off the main path and go exploring. When you see the signs for the caves, it’s a bit of a detour but definitely worth doing. I promise you won’t regret it!
